Roll Bar is what they use to be called
now a days it's a Sport Bar . somewhere a lawyer decided it was time to change the liability disclaimer

I can see if you want to drive a jeep without a bar . as Howard posted accidents "Happen"
Now my .02 cents . no bar and no belts
I was in the army with the MUTTs . no Bar no Seat Belts . you had the steering wheel , your buddy had the grab handle

as to my jeep it has a roll cage . with lap belts . low back seats . that's about as much safety equipment it has

The roll bar or cage subject along with restraints has been beat to death for years on many forums........yet we read about accidents, injuries & deaths daily....roll bar, sport bar, chrome moly, DOM, water pipe , frame mounted, or I don't need one ........and so be it!

From a person that has made hundreds of 200+ mph pases on a drag strip , I like being strapped into the envelope of security and I also like it in my off road vehicles cause you can be just as dead at 5 mph as 200...

My old 66 after an accident. The driver was texting and ran into the side of it; the guy claimed it rolled 3 times but I figured there'd be much more damage to it.

Wow! can you send more pics of the roll cage? It looks it protected you allright! A cage like that is what I'm looking for to install in my 62 CJ5. I want front seat protection, but I also care about the heads of the passengers in the back seat.:sneak: Where did you get that roll cage? Did you repair the 66 or got rid of it?

    Roll bars save lives.
    I didn't say all lives.
If you like to roll the dice with your life, drive the Jeep without a roll bar.
    On or off road.
I suppose it will take a near death experience to convince a few of you....
    if you survive.....
It's not about how the Jeep looks.....

Another option that I designed at the shop I work at:

Jeep CJ-5 Fastback Cage Kit | D and C Extreme

... also comes in a family style rear half.

I couldn’t agree more with what already been stated. Not having some kind of protection should be dedicated to those who only trailer their vehicles to shows or drive them in parades.

I’ve got a full cage and seat belts, lap belts in my 55 that where there when I bought it. I considered removing the cage to have the classic look but so far I haven’t.

That post of the cage above looks real nice @neohic

My Tux has been in my family since new in '65, and the 30+ years it was on the road, never had a roll bar and never needed one. Maybe we were lucky?
I bought a wrecked '72 CJ5 that had an AMC 390 that was fast. I watched it roll with 5 people in it, 3 standing in the bed holding onto the standard rollbar. That roll was at 50+ mph on the beach. No seat belts worn, and the driver got a bad gash from going over the windshield frame. No other injuries. Everyone got thrown out like rag dolls. They were lucky, and the Jeep drove home after removing the fan from the radiator. It rolled 2 1/2 times.
Final story, I looked at buying a neighbors '74 Jeep after it was wrecked. He was driving late at night and fell asleep. The road curved and he went straight - into a big tree. He had a seatbelt on. The Jeep didn't look that bad, but he was torn in two at the waist from the lap-type seatbelt, killed near instantly. I knew one of the first responders, and he said he will never forget that wreck.
Our old Jeeps are not very safe in accidents, but a lot of thought needs to be considered when you start making modifications, and how the Jeep will be used.

This was a couple days after I sold it to a guy. It had a YJ rollbar retrofitted to it. (complete hack job) To my knowledge, he "fixed" it with new leaf springs and an axle. See it had no seatbelts when I sold it so if it, in fact, did roll I don't see how he didn't fall out of the jeep

As tarry99 mentioned above, lots of debate, but ultimately a personal decision. Kind of like wearing motorcycle helmets in states where they are optional. You can control many of the variables in where and how you drive, but not all of them. There is always the unexpected variable of other drivers, something breaking, locking-up, etc. Again, personal choice.

Funny story - When my son was 5 or 6 years old, he was surprised to see a motorcycle rider without a helmet. I explained to him that it was not required, even though I always wear one. In trying to explain to him further, I said that you need to dress for the crash, not for the ride because you just never know. I went on to say that if you were going for a ride and knew for certain that you were going to crash, how would you gear up? You would gear up with the best helmet, the jacket, pants, gloves, boots with the most protection possible. He listened intently, soaking it all in and I couldn't help but be pleased with how well I had made my point. That is, until his response...

"Dad, if knew I was going to crash, I wouldn't go for a ride." 20 yrs on, still a smartazz.
