i was looking through some old catalogs and saw an ad for those revolver shackles. ho much can the leaf twist and how are the shackles self supporting is it because the spring will extend to its limits and stop or is it just false advertising?

I'm trying to understand your question about the self supporting?

I've been on the trail with guys who had these. They seemed to work allright to me. Not any better than a coil sprung TJ though. ;)

well the ad says they are self supporting but it looks like they will just fold under a load and then droop in the air :?

That's the idea, they fold up to a "normal" length then unfold for more flex. It effectively makes the spring longer by lenthening the shackle with out all the nasty side effect of a 6" tall shackle. :D

On the self limiting thing, what that means now that I think on it more. The shackle will stop before you over extend your spring, shock, brake line whatever... They only unfold so far and stop.

so the shackle is built to give you more travel and also let you have a nice ride on the road and not rip out your brake lines or anything else

    Yeah, that's what they claim.

It takes quite a bit to get them to extend. It wouldn't happen on the road very likely. It takes some upwards pressure on the opposite side of the axle forcing it down to get it to open up or just quite a bit of droop.

I run with guys that have had them installed, and they won't make your rig flex any better, unless your shocks are too long for the setup you have now.

To take full advantage of them, you would have to have custom shock mounts to allow for a much longer shock- the stock mounts are too close together to allow enough droop for the Revolvers to be a benefit.

Also- keep in mind that they don't do anything to limit droop like a conventional shackle would. The spring is allowed to unload off the frame when the Revolver opens up, which is not good for sidehills, especially with the narrow spring spacing our early rigs have.
