I thought I'd try using those brass drifts and my 5 lb. cross pien hammer to remove the bearings. This was impossible on the '80 trans. clearances were just too darn tight. Now with theis rebuilt '68 so far the front bearing is halfway out ~ took a break from the tedious tap tap tapping until later this morning but it sure is good to see some progress.

I tried out the small brass drift and was making progress until it's almost halfway out then... Doh! I may have gotten happy too soon plinking away at that front bearing and it seems not to be moving as much. I tried using the 3/4" drift on the bottom of the bearing with a wood cushion just in case it was crabbing out, only the upper side of the bearing is reachable from inside the case, but so far no progress that I can see.

I may try standing this trans. on it's nose on the edge of the freight cart and try working vertically. I wonder if penetrating oil would help?

So, is the bearing actually coming off your shaft or is the whole shaft coming out of the case? It's been a while for me and I can't really remember how it came apart but there was a reason why the bearing HAS to come off the shaft for disassembly, I think. I dunno. You already know this though, from taking the other trans apart.

But here's a pic of a cheap HF clam shell puller with some extra length grade 5 bolts to make it fit around the bearing. Notice that IS a bit precariously attached with every stud in the kit screwed together and only half hanging onto the bar out at the end. But this bearing was sort of tight and it came off with this set up.

I'd have to reread my thread, notes, the manual I bought from somewhere and the pictures to get a handle on it again. Go get yourself one of those pullers and some long bolts and some nuts and washers.

It may come to that, this isn't a rush job for me luckily, BBB is running okay save for a 02 sensor gremlin that ran from Bank 2 Sensor 1 to Sensor 2, gonna hafta chase it with that hammer.

I took the T18 to the mechanic at AAMCO on friday and he's going to pull those bearing for me, last time was free so I greased him with a bottle of Bacardi Gold. Upon looking through this T18 with a mini mag light he remarked that the synchros looked fresh to him also too the gears save for the reverse idler which is still serviceable.

    (y) Well played, sir. I'd work for Bacardi.
