There should be a right hand thread & a left hand threaded adjuster, you want them so that when the little self adjuster lever pulls up from the brakes being applied the star wheel screws out of the barrel pushing the bottom of the shoes apart.

TSM should have a picture. Jzeber's picture above is of Bendix brakes, and the 10" brakes are Wagner IIRC... not Bendix. Different.

Just remember that the left is a mirror image of the right (front is front, both sides), and when the lever climbs the star wheel and releases, the adjuster gets longer (tightens the brakes). You can screw this up by putting the left adjuster on the right side (and vice-versa) or by assembling so the parts are backwards (front to the back). The adjusters are stamped L and R.

I have backing plates with brake shoes and springs still attached. Just do not know which backing plate goes on what side.

I bought new adjusters from O'reillys. Part number #H1523 is marked/stampered "R" and the parts guy said it is for the Front Right or Left Rear. Part number H1522, Marked "L" is for the Front Left or Right Rear. The stamping on the adjusters and what the parts guy told me, is confusing me, and I hate when that happens.

Will look at it tonight when I get home

Here is a picture of a backing plate. The wires for the adjuster, they point/go to the front of the Jeep. Is this correct? I will then pick the correct adjuster to spread the shoes.

The wires that you refer to should be following the rear or long shoe. What I’m looking at in your pic would be the left side brake assembly. Are you using them on the front or rear? Only reason I ask is that there is no parking brake provision on these backing plates.

The emergency brake is on the back of the transfer case through 1971. 1972 was the first year for the foot-activated parking brake, that acts on the rear brake shoes.
