In the picture u can see a rubber ring that was inside the cup. The problem is the rubber ring keeps the cup from going all the way on the yoke housing (on the right) so u cant bend the little tabs down to lock it in place in the grove on the housing. If it isn't locked it will just move with the spline shaft and not clean the splines as the the shaft moves in and out. I can't seem to find a diagram of the driveshaft to see if it is supposed to be there. If it isn't replaced then the cup can lock down and clean the splines as they move in and out.
What do u think? Should it be there or not?

U mean to line it up so both ends connect up, 4 bolts on transfer case and yoke on differential.

IMG_0883.JPG Factory Service Manual. See the yokes in the picture? They need to line up with each other.

When new the rubber was very pliable. It is designed to keep water out of the splines. It doesn't clean anything. You put the ring onto the shaft, push the washer past the splines and then push the yoke onto the splines. The caps on both ends need to line up"in time with each other"

    OK, thanks for the input.

So push pt 9 up onto pt 10, then pt 8 up into 9, then pt 10 into pt 7, then bend tabs on pt 9 into groove on pt 7. correct??

If the rubber is very stiff rub some silicone grease into it. That will soften it up. Should be available at any parts store. Also called di-electric grease.

As Daryl replied, that piece of rubber is a seal designed to both keep dirt and water out and keep grease in the splined portion. Both the seal and the toothed retainer assemble all the way past the splines on the shaft in the left side of your picture. The retainer is supposed to crimp onto the yoke part on the right in your picture. Be sure to put a fresh glob of grease in there before you assemble. There is a small hole behind the u-joint saddle to vent pressure as the shaft moves on the spline.

yes. the rubber washer is way to thick so u cant crimp the little tabs into groove in the yoke part.I will find a little thinner one.

    Thanks
