The rear crossmember of the Land Rover had a PTO hole in it. This is one of those things that make it a Land Rover. Since I am making the frame out of Rec tube and I need to know how much space i need around the hole to integrity of the tubing.

    The tubing is 2x5
The hole I want to make is 4 inches. Will this make the tubing too weak if i cut the hole and weld in a sleeve?

So If i did 4 inch PTO hole like original that will leave me with 1/2 inch top and bottom of the hole.
Will this be too little? I was originally going to do a 3 inch hole but i found this piece of tubing to sleeve it with. The original hole was 4 inch OD for the Rover crossmember, but the crossmember was a bit thicker.

I'd go with 4" tubing, it's a crossmember so no real vertical load to stress it; I'd think 1/2' top & bottom would be fine in this circumstance, the real stress wouldn't be on the web anyhow.

I think my only caveate to that is tow tow with it. Not like i will tow much, but i may drag a small trailer. I was planning on sinking in a receiver in the crossmember also

Once you weld that tube in there the pice might actually be stronger at that point due to the structralization of the area. As long as you have good welds.
