Quick Dj-5 Question

Hi I recently purchased a 78 dj-5. Been surfing the web trying to figure out if the front springs are the same as a pre 76 cj5. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.

Hi Jacob -

Do you have a DJ-5 or a Postal, ie DJ-5F with the postal body? The postals have plenty of differences from the civilian Jeeps. There's got to be a forum out there (maybe on Yahoo) that focuses on postals, and could provide some expert advice.

If it's a domestic or export vehicle (ie not a postal), my parts book for '74-80 does not show any differences in the springs between the 2WD and 4WD model 80s in 1978. For the CJs, the spring width does change for 1976, so a pre-76 CJ spring will not fit on a 1978 CJ.

 

A DJ has the front spring with one eye upside down. A set of 55-75 front CJ springs will interchange.

Warn hub box I found in my grandpa's basement lol. My first pic uploaded,lol. Kind of a test. Bust back to the dj springs. Anybody know what jeep the rear ones will cross reference to?

Are they broken or are you trying to lift?

 

Just looking to lift it a couple of inches . I have some skinny super swampers and was wasnti g to make it look less mail jeep

 

You might consider a helper leaf. Your Jeep has long u-bolts so this would be simple and inexpensive. I would look at your local parts store so you can touch and measure the part along with easy return (if needed)



In my experience 235-75-15 tires is about as much as you can stuff under the rear fender. You will need to Jack it up on the frame (not the axle)to get full droop on the springs to mount the wheel. The other alternative us to discard the side doors and remove the side door channels. Then cut out your fender well to match a CJ. Then you can use a wider selection of tires.

A DJ5F will always look postal so love it. They are fun to drive and work on. There is a postal group on Yahoo but it appears to be inactive. There is a postal jeep group on facebooger. IDK anything about it cause I don't do FB.

I have had success with most local parts stores in getting parts. Hard to find parts are available from www.postaljeep.net . There is also a guy in Duncanville, TX that runs a store on eBay that has postal jeep parts.

Thanks olgreoi. I bought a set of 29 x 8.50 super swampers and bolted one on both ends and they fit (a little tight in the rear) but will be good enough for street driving. I just bought it a few weeks ago and got it running but it ran rough. Turned out had a bent valve. My buddy had a 4.0 head so I put it on the 232 . Also used the 4.0 horseshoe intake and adapted the Carter yf . I think I need to lower my camera resolution so the pics will upload as I'm using my phone to post. Thanks for you guys help on my questions so far

I like the solid wheels. Years ago, a company called "Gitt's Spring" in Auburn, WA made rear lift springs for a postal. About 2.5" if I remember correctly. I don't know if they still make them, but they are still in business. I have a new set still sitting in my garage. I had purchased a bare frame and was going to swap it under my 3A... I never got around to it.
