There are lots of questions about vin and serial numbers, but mine is about the decal that is on some JEEP's dash. It lists the month and year manufactured. What years were they used? I don't remember having one on my 69 CJ5, but it has been a long time ago so maybe I just got no recollection. I found a good picture of one on a post today so I will try to put the picture on here so you see what I am asking about. Thanks. WCP

Nope-still too stupid to post a picture on here-But I think it is in Media now.

Does anyone know when the yellow dash VIN decals were begun by Kaiser?

Another question is why did they start putting them on?

Is that not about the time that the feds required all car manufactures to have to show the vin from the outside of the veh. so cops could see the vin without entering the vehicle ? That is why we have the vin on the dash on most standard cars now.

I was thinking that readily accessible (as is the case now) had a lot to do with it. I guess Jeep was able to get away with the decal on the dash due to the vehicle design.

I own a 69 with August 17th dealer paper work ser. # 8305017360056 and it does not have a sticker. I purchased a cj5 camper and the original cj5 that pulled it was a 70 ser. #8305017361096 with a dash sticker of Sept. 1969. I would think September of 69 for 70 models. American Motors had been in negotiations with Kaiser since at least April of 69, they probably had something to do with it.

This is a very narrow spread of serial numbers (1040 units), so you info is very helpful. You likely have the correct answer that the stickers became a running change for the '69 model year.
    Thanks -Donny

Donny, recently found a 1969 CJ5 with ser. # 8305017360378. The window tightens to 718 units.

My 1969 CJ5 has a serial number of #830517357078. I would still like to know the build date if possible. WCP

Pat, for the CJ5's prior to the dash sticker, I'm not aware of a definative list of production dates based on serial numbers. From your number, I would extrapolate that you have a July/August build date on your '69.

Thank fctex. He is the one that supplied all the information. All I did was interpret his numbers in post #9.

Many thanks to all on here who spend some time helping out. I just hope I get my 69 home and back on the road (or dirt), and can meet some of you. WestCoastPat

Looks like you have it nailed down to only 302 units with August '69 for when Kaiser started using the dash vin decals.
