Will this carrier be suitable with moderate wheeling holding a 33” tire?

IMO - anything larger than the factory size on a '79, no.

will your wheel bolt to that or is the mount using the later 5x4.5 bolt pattern? Plus it doesn't look like it is all there.

    '79 is 5 on 5.5".

Yes, the mounting brackets are essential. If it's from a CJ-5, the CJ body is essentially the same as your Jeep. If from a CJ-7, it's different. Same width, different tailgate.

Tested the wheel fit and that’s fine. Just don’t know about durability?

Personally, I wouldn't. That's a lot of weight on a design that was marginal at best for a stock tire, when new.

My experience - the factory carriers will break with a larger-than-stock tire.

Maybe it is from a 7. Is the CJ7 tailgate narrower? It barely fit across my tailgate.

Sounds like you know where you are going with this project...but just for reference I had one of those OEM carries on a previous cj with a 33x12.5 tire - it broke twice. I then went aftermarket.

Had one on my jeep with that same size tire. I turned the drawbar upside down and the tire rested on a hockey puck I bolted in the hitch ball hole. Didn’t have it on long and when I unbolted it the holes in the body were elongated.
