Finally had some time to myself to work on the tub a bit more. Ground down the weld and cleaned up the firewall. Oddly enough, both jeeps were the same color originally!

Looks better with some Allis Chalmers orange to boot!

I finally had a chance to pull the tracks off and put the summer tires too. Now I can't wait to get the new tub on.

I put some 11" drum brakes on the 4.88 power lock axle. Now it needs a pinion seal and diff gasket and it will be good to go!

I did notice something different about the v6 D44s. The outer axle grease seal rides on the axle shaft instead of the hub like on my 4 cyl jeeps. I'm guessing this style seal works better than the one on hub.

I would sure appreciate if you feel like doing a write-up on doing the pinion seal! I 'get it' in theory, but I've been putting off doing the job on my flanged offset dana 44, and my dana 30. I don't trust myself not to mess it up in an expensive and devastating way!

it's really, really simple. pull the yoke off, pull the seal off, put the new seal on, and put the yoke on. it'd be a good idea to check the yoke for a ring where the seal has worn it down, that'll make it leak even with a new seal.

It's not as simple as that.

The pinion nut also sets the preload on the pinion bearings.
There are various methods of making sure you have the correct preload on the pinion bearings when reinstalling the pinion nut.

If this is the first time you've replaced a pinion seal I'd recommend jacking up the rear axle and removing the wheels and brake drums.
This will allow you to get a good feel for the drag on the pinion as you rotate it. You may even use a needle type torque wrench to see how much force is required to rotate the pinion, differential and axles.

This will tell you how much preload is on the pinion bearings and allow you to set it the same upon reassembly.

And up next...how to rebuild a motor..."it's really really simple" just take out all the parts and put new ones in and add some new seals. :banghead:

    Project's coming along nicely Nate.

That's my quandary. I've heard of the "mark it, count the threads, and tighten 1/16th" further" as well as the "tighten until the inch/lb torque wrench says to stop" method.

But what about crush washers and such, and what if my current axles preload is lousy?

It's a crush sleeve, it goes in the housing between the bearings. Not all axles use them. In my opinion, if you return the pinion and nut to it's original position the crush sleeve ought to be fine.

As to your concern of the preload being wrong to begin with, I don't have a good answer. Some things you have to trust were correct in the past, and you do your best to return things to where you found them.
A little mechanical detective work may help here. How much dirt/grease/rust are on the u-joint hardware and the pinion shaft before you remove the pinion nut? If it looks old it was probably fine and ran good for a number of years.

Pull the wheels/brake drums and drive shaft and see how much play is in the yoke. It ought to go around smoothly but not have any noticeable side to side or in and out play.

Let me know when you've completed a cross country trip with an engine you've rebuilt.

D44s do not have crush sleeves. Shims are used instead.

I spent a few hours this afternoon cutting the "my first effed up welding project" out of the bed and driver's side. The bed floor is pretty bad with some rot. I may replace but not sure yet. This jeep isn't a restoration piece, so Im not sure how far into rust repair I want to get.

The driver's side floor has some rot above the hat channels I'll probably fix that.

Also put the center caps in the wheels. You know, gotta do the important stuff first!

With the hurricane rolling through, I had time to work in the garage. I pulled the Dana 30 apart and cleaned it all up.

And this tool is a must for cleaning the axle tubes. Before putting the scotch bright on, I use it to scrape the gunk out of the tubes. Then I put the pad on and make it into a ball and use a drill to clean the tubes. I spray brake parts cleaner in as well. The I use a rag to swab out the tube like I'm cleaning a gun barrel. Works great!

I pulled the tub off the rotisserie so I could patch the floors and replace hat channels.

The classic ent. hat channels fit really well and it nice knowing the floors are solid again. Another day of welding and grinding and it will be all finished up! I replaced the L brackets on the rear as well.

I used them on my 2a. As well as some other patch panels. Great guys to work with. Didn't mind giving them my money.

I finally got the rust repair done on the tub and got it all painted. It came out as well as you would expect with tractor paint and a roller. :D I didn’t care about dents either. This weekend I’ll swap the tub out.
