1953 Willys Overland M38A1? Can it be done? Has it even been attempted?

The more I look at this thing, the more I'm seeing what needs to be done to it. No brake light switch, gas guage doesn't work. Drum brakes need adjusted. It is looking like most of the little bushings and rubber pieces need to be replaced in the suspension pieces. The shocks that go down the middle of the coil over springs could probably be replaced. It has homemade headers bolted to the 231 Buick and they dump right into a couple of glass packs. I'd like to quiet it down some with some legit mufflers instead of the tractor it sounds like now.....

    wow......so much to do!

Dondo, try some cheapo Turbo mufflers (~$17 ea. at Pep Boys)
They're quieter than glass packs, but have a decent sound when you stomp it. Look up Header Buddies to mate the collector to the muffler http://www.headerbuddy.com/
instead of those crappy collector gaskets. Add some 90* turn-outs after the muffler for cheap side-exit exhaust.

As for the power steering, you're should be just like many of us here with the 225. Get your pump and brackets from a bone yard on a late 70s/early 80-s Buick V6 RWD car. Get a box from a late 70's big GM car, or even from a CJ. Get a stock CJ shaft. Get a later CJ tie rod and drag link, you'll need a Commando TRE on the pass side with a hole for the drag link. Or you could swap in a D30
Go out to our Home page, there's an article or two out there on it. Also search this forum for Saginaw Steering, you'll get alot of reading material that will answer most of your questions.
Read up, then come back with specific questions.

The old drum brakes always need adjusted. Consider an upgrade to all 11" drums, or 11" rears w/front disc... again, lots of info on the search...

Cool, thanks for the quick info. Btw, I already have 11" brakes all the way around. :)

You might need to take the self-adjusting mechanisms apart and clean/lube/antisieze the parts so the self adjusters work.
Plan on being in much water when offroading?
Consider drilling your 11" drums for better wet and dry performance.
    Search on Drilled Drums... ;)

Thanks for the advice. I plan on pulling the drums apart to take a look this weekend sometime.
To be honest, I don't even know where in Kansas I can take this thing off roading. You can bet that 75% of my Jeep time will be most likely driving around town or out in the county.

    Thanks again!
