IMHO one of the reasons Duke's Jeep looks so good is that it does not have a roll bar or cage. It's an old fashioned & classic look. An "ORIGINAL CJ5" if I may be so bold. I go back & forth in my mind (I know, it's a short trip) about taking mine off, however, I drive mine on the street more than off road & the thought of asphalt or concrete sanding down my skull as I slide down the pavement inverted makes my skin crawl, just a little. Thoughts & comments appreciated.

I'm soooo confused. The attached photo (in his reply) is sans rollbar, avatar with. The worlds gone maaaad!

My thoughts are that the bolt-in Jeep roll bar is a mere suggestion to not getting one's head bashed in or scrubbed off. Many of the custom roll bars and cages offer much more protection. My point is this: I can see little advantage to the 'top holder-upper' we tend to put so much faith in.
    Let the opinions commense! R)

Take it out. People drive all kinds of convertibles every day without a rollbar. Think about some of the Mustangs or other convertibles. As for the advantages of the top holder-upper, I don't put much faith in them at all as far as protection. But they can some times take quite a bit and still keep you safe. It is different in every situation.

So you trust the hardtop on every other car on the road? Personally the rollbar is to me about equal to the adverage roof of any car on the road, yeh it won't save you in a 100MPH rollover where you end up landing on your roof a few times but in the adverage rollover it will keep your noggin' from hitting pavement.

I'll throw my .02 in here: The factory Jeep rollbar may not be much but it is certainly better tha nothing. Here is why I think so. I watched a Suzuki Samurai (stock) in 1988 flip off of the 66th st. overpass onto US19 in Clearwater florida, the vehicle was hit by a car at about 20 mph, the 2 occupents in the Samurai got out unscathed after falling more than 25 feet to the concrete below and being hit by a 3000# car. The Samurai was rolled back over and after about 5 minutes of cranking it started up and they drove it off the road. After seeing several Jeeps hit in crash's and flipped you would be surprised at what there capable of taking in an impact.
Oh and just for your info Dukes Jeep does have a rollbar in it, just not in every picture.

Don't sell a bolt in roll bar to short (and fiberglass tubs too). I was in a roll over in my friends fiberglass CJ2 some years ago. The bar, cage actually, was bolted to the fenderwell & floorboards. We rolled and flipped off a dirt road in an area with large boulders at around 45 mph. The dents in the tubes bore proof that the cage landed on some of those boulders and saved our lives. I agree, jeeps without roll bars look really cool but I personally could never ride in one. I also believe good side pressure on an early CJ windshield frame (particularly rusted ones) in a roll over would pop the glass and flatten leaving no protection for one's head. Stepping off soap box now.

I never said that I trusted anything. I do feel that an automobile with an integrated hardtop is likely more substantial (I would bet it depends on the car and the nature of the roll over) than the 'bolt in' type roll bar (such as mine) that is held in place by 12 or 16 bolts. Now, as I have already stated, custom 'cages' likely offer more protection than both of the aforementioned.
Anything can be destroyed. I simply would not, with full confidence, place my life solely in the 'hands' of any roll bar. Note that the cages in NASCAR are fully integrated chassis and not merely a 'roof support'. My main point being this: Bolt in roll bars do provide certain protection but it's very little. Is one in a Jeep without a roll bar safer than he who is on a motorcycle? Let me agree in advance that I'd prefer a motorcycle laying on top of me over a Jeep. Just a thought-

The topic and arguments about the factory roll bars seems to come up in every thread on all boards. The bottom line is, the factory roll bar offers more protection than no roll bar. A full cage offers more protection than the factory roll bar. And a full cage attached to a properly braced frame offers more protection than the rest. It all depends on how well it is built and how bad the crash is. The full cage doesn't do much good without harnesses because if you come out, the cage will likely land on you or you will beat your brains out on it in a rollover. Without a rollbar of any kind, in a lot of cases you may be better off not wearing a seatbelt so you can be thrown clear.

Basically, the best thing for safety is not to wreck your Jeep. With a full cage attached to the frame and 5-point harnesses, it is ok to roll it. It could also be ok to roll it with just a factory roll bar. And blah blah blah blah we could go on for days on this topic and there is proof to back up both sides of the story. It is all in the type of crash that you are in.

Just don't crash and you won't have to worry about it.

Most of these comments, pro & con, I have heard before. I am 100% sure that in anything but the most heinous crash, the factory roll bar would be sufficient to protect you from a "fatal" injury. The factory unit is mounted to a large angle iron plate which does spread the load, thus reducing the chance it would tear away from the sheetmetal. Also there is a large backing plate under the wheel house which reinforces the lower mounting bolts. This also presupposses that you are NOT riding in a rust bucket of a tub.

This setup is similar to "fiberglass" boats with deck cleats (with backing plates). They will bear tremendous loads in a hurricane without failure. If you can imagine a 20,000 lb boat withstanding hurricane force winds...the lines will break or the anchor may fail, but the cleat & deck (usually)remain intact.

I place absolutely no faith at all in the windshield frame, no matter what the severity of a roll over. I guess until I retire my jeep to farm or parade duty, I will keep my rollbar.

I agree with both of you, don't crash and something is better than nothing.
Without really tearing into the dynamics of a crash it is truely difficult to discuss- One must make up their own mind as to what makes them comfortable. As MCScott indicates: Safety does start between the ears... The best advice.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm wavering between Lynn's dark green and this light blue/silver. If anyone can identify the blue Jeep code I would appreciate it. I can't remember where I got the pics. Thanks, Kristin
