So I was headed into work a few weeks ago & since it was a nice day I was taking Tonk. :)

Decided to take the highway for a change & about 2 minutes into the 60 MPH+ period the engine backfired & died :(

Coasting off to the shoulder I quickly discovered that the points in my dizzy I bought from Walcks, with all of about 500 miles on it, had busted- the steel tension spring has snapped right at the end.

Thankfully I had a spare set I bought from Walcks , just in case, at the beginning of summer.

Got then in, sort of set, & managed to limp home with an engine miss.

Played with it a bit off & on but I had time today to really dig into it.

I'm idling very smoothly at around 800 rpm, timing is set to 5 degrees BDTC & dwell is at about 42 degrees.

When I give it gas the dwell starts dropping & the engine starts missing & will not pass 2000 RPM.

While the "old" points had a single steel spring, the replacement set have a copper strap with a steel C-clip kind of arraignment that honestly doesn't seem to do much.

To my un-calibrated fingers there doesn't seem to be much tension on the points, I'm wondering if the little Boogers are bouncing.

    Input anyone?

    Apart from "pertronix"??

    ?

Bounce as in lobe action throwing them open past the set gap? Wouldn't surprise me.

Whose points is Walck's selling? I'm guessing Omix replacement stuff. Just guessing. I'd look for name brand parts from somewhere.

In the days of yore, point spring tension was a specification to be checked and adjusted.

    17 to 20 ounces for the F-head.

I have a spare set that I tried when I had coil problems and found that the screw that holds the wires for the coil and condenser was hitting the spring on the points when the points were on the lobe of the dist. IIRC Was something to that effect. My memory is gone

Yeah no way there's anywhere near that much tension, I'm wondering if maybe the c clip thingie is supposed to go on the "inside" of the copper strap.

Not sure what you mean by a C-clip. Ones I've seen with a 'double layer' strap/spring had the copper loose on the outside of the bend, IIRC.
