Just bought this and want to be certain it's right for my 71.
I'm not sure as mine is buried under smog, vac lines and etc.
Otherwise I plan to move it along.
Edit-> Appears to be a '78 231 even fire. Worth keeping for use, or ...?

Post up the casting numbers from the flange area between the back of the head and the bellhousing mounting surface.
I have a rebuilders book of casting numbers to identify most blocks and heads.

Thank you all, I knew it was not a 225, wanted to be sure it would work.
    I'll get the numbers tomorrow.

I saw that on Craigslist, just couldn’t justify buying it as I already have a running spare.

That is what I was looking for. I still need to figure out what year for what flywheel will be required.
The front of the engine appears to (perhaps) have a balancer and later timing tab. iirc mid 77 went to even fire. I need to pull the casting numbers to make sure what this is.

I hope it's as good on the inside! Save for the orange and black oil filter. That has to go.

Is that a Kenne Bell Number One Intake on it? If it is, it may have other Kenne Bell parts in it.

block # is 1261438. l believe it's a 78 even fire. to use I think I'll need new distributor (yea, get rid of this prestolite), flywheel and exhaust.

Thinking about this, seems this motor will work on our early jeeps but many parts will not interchange (crankshaft, camshaft, distributor and the cylinder heads and intake manifold). I was hoping it would be more plug-and-play allowing me to save the original motor.
Is this best left for a custom build?

From the casting number, your engine is an even-fire 231, from '78-'81. The block could be from a 2bbl, 4bbl, or turbo (Regal) in its original form. This engine takes a distributor which makes it simple to make it run in a Jeep, as opposed to the later versions of this engine. If the cam profile is reasonable, this could be a nice engine for your CJ. RockAuto has a flywheel for this 231 for a very reasonable price, and they have a great price on an HEI distributor too. I can get the part number for the flywheel tomorrow. The distributor would be for an even-fire 231 Buick, '77-up.
Your intake looks like a Weiand single-plane manifold which would work, but a dual-plane would be better suited for use in a Jeep.

Thank you Keys, your info parallels my research/ I'm new to the dauntless (but not wrenching). Don't bother about the info on flywheel, I did come across that. My thought was the price looked good, shipping might be costly. I'm shying away from thoughts of using the motor because of all the components I'll have to buy to make it work. For me a better option is to stick with the odd fire. Mine runs, yet is all stock and I've been looking at getting spare parts/components for future mods (valve seats, port matching and rods) and use.
Learning curve is slow on these engines but I'm gaining ground now.

For what its worth, the RockAuto flywheel is Luk brand, with the part number LK LFW131. I think it was like $60 delivered?
You might be less costly running your 225 while you source the last few parts for the 231. That 231 looks like it has recently been gone through, so may just need a few obvious external parts. It should be a drop-in swap for your CJ.

Run the 231 with a flywheel and bolt it in. Everything externally is the same.

I decided against using it. Beside being a wheeler I'm somewhat of a purist and historian whom likes to keep things original. I know the motor is not a big deal to many, to me I'd rather keep this one oddfire.

That looks to be correct vintage yet has 4bbl intake. I found another complete 231 motor that has not been rebuilt. I'll be patient and see what shows up.
