I think the front mount oil pan sump will work in my jeep with the 3" springs. Not sure, but I would like a donor for everything else.

I may still buy a brand new motor if I do the swap. Mine needs to be gone through because the idiot left the engine cover off and it got water in spark arrestor in the rain. It turned over but pumped water out of 1. I rebuilt the carb and ran it for a little while, so it might run for years with no problems.

I paid $500 for the whole boat with Mercruiser outdrive and galvanized trailer, so I don't feel to put out and that gives me a starting point if I go this way. Looks like the boat flywheel is same as the car flywheel, just needs to be surfaced for a clutch.

I have from Machined BH to Water pump (no pully on)
    231 - 23 3/4
    225 - 22 3/4

The water pump on a 231 is 1 inch longer than on the 225 (search will get you this too). I have from block face P side to front of pully 231 - 9 1/8 & 225 8 1/8.

I can link pics to the motors I measured if you want them (got 2 each on stands).

Oldtime, straying from the 3B page! What would Derek say?:)

I have the same measurement as Warloch on a '67 225, 22 3/4" from bellhousing mating surface to the water pump pulley mount

WARNING !.... crossing from Jeep site to Jeep site may cause custom Jeep modifications !

Guys, that's exactly the measurements I needed. You get a large can of Fosters. and two Willys points each.

So just as I suspected it looks like the Dauntless 225 wins 1st place in the drivetrain inches game for having the shortest possible power train.
The total length of engine/bellhouse will be about 29-1/8".
When you include the T-18 transmission and its transfer case adapter this measurement goes to right about 42". ( no bellhousing adapter)

Second place goes to the 153 Stove bolt or GM 181 having a combined engine/bellhouse length of 29-7/8".
When you include the T-18 transmission and its transfer case adapter this measurement goes to right about 42-3/4 ". ( no bellhousing adapter )

Third place looks like the 231 Buick setup having a combined engine/bellhouse length of 30-1/8".
When you include the T-18 transmission and its transfer case adapter this measurement goes to right about 43 ". ( no bellhousing adapter )

For comparison, the stock F-134 powertrain has an engine bellhouse length of 31.25".
When you include the T-98 transmission and its bellhousing adapter plus transfer case adapter this measurement goes to right about 45".

So in theory the rear propeller shaft can be longer than the propeller used with the F-134/T-98 combination when one is using a custom built four speed powertrain.

Sorry if I did not include your favorite engine in this game. Thanks for playing the driveline inches game !

IMHO The 225V6/T90/D18 is a great combo for the flatfender. I've never been able to find a better performing package that fits between the frame rails and has better ground clearance. Gear down the D18 T.C. and you don't need a Granny 4spd.

I appreciate your humble opinion willysworker, even though I previously specifically designated the T18/98 as mandatory

    I will concede certain facts. T-90 vs. T-98/ T-18

1] The T-90 sure does allow for better off-road ground clearance.
2] It sure is great to have a matching bolt patten which fits right without the use of any adapters.
3} The T-90 rules in the shortness category which is crucial for these early short wheelbased Jeeps.
4] Less physical mass / weight which better fits the original stipulations proposed for the original jeeps.
5] Time proven dependability ! Produced for 27 years running.

A] The T-98/18 is probably a better match concerning V-6 engine ouitput and model 18 transfer case strength. This increases durability.
B] The T-98/18 allows one to roll through stop signs when one is driving in town.
C} The T-98/18 simply allows for wider gear ranging. This allows greater driving flexabiklity.

Score ... five points for T-90.... three points for T-98/18

Looks like the T-90 is doing very well.

Can't you lug the 225 lower due to a heavier flywheel though? I know I have had mine chugging as low as 250-300 rpms on the trail. I must say that was a nice option to have when we were just idling down the trail, I wasn't on the brakes all the time like the newer jeeps.
