    Gents,
I have a 71 without a tailgate, and it has factory paint on it, but it has a heavy plate welded into the tube and I'm unsure if it's really factory.
    Rough welds.
Just looking for some good picks of the same year to see if what I have is factory.
It almost looks like AMC took a tailgate tub and welded in a plate. It also has a factory looking side tire carrier welded on back of jeep at a cant also.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks
    JT

The only way you could get the solid back panel in 1971 was as part of the Renegade II package. There are several other factory features that only appeared with that package, including paint colors, stripes, gauges, roll bar, and rear tire carrier. Some of these could be dealer installed, but the back panel could not without bodywork and a respray. It's a complete panel which replaces the tailgate and its surround, eliminating the tailgate frame and surrounding rear panel. The solid back panel did not appear on the regular option list until 1973.

If you look here http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/cool-jeep-dealer-ad.141761/ this video for 1973 has several examples of CJ-5s with the solid back panel. Classic Enterprises makes a replacement panel that's a reproduction of original equipment. 1972 - 1975 Jeep CJ5 There is a stamped and formed reinforcement on the outside of the panel, and the fixed tire carrier goes in the center. This is a lot like the M38A1 Korean War-era military Jeeps, except the tire carrier is centered instead of offset to one side.

Your picture shows the fuel tank and filling tube at the rear. I could be wrong but I thought that was moved to the rear from the drivers side in '72?

    Definitely custom.

The fuel filler hole is in the right place for a '71. The tank moved to the rear in mid-year 1970.

Gas tank moved in 1970, I have often wondered when it was actually moved to the rear. What info I can find that is reliable is the factory sales brochure for the 1971 jeep cj5 and it shows the gas tank under the seat. Now they could have used the 1970 model yr vehicles and called them 71. Curious

If you look at any picture, it is an old picture.

The only real timestamp photos are at the end of the production line. Fifo was not a big thing in those days and some times the individual parts can be several years old, or they just didn't have em. Top bow sockets are a prime example. Seems like new colors won't have top bow sockets while traditional colors might have bow sockets later after the "date"
