Paint codes and todays paint

    Haven't had to deal w/ this before but how do paint formulas, as written in a 62 jeep manual, relate to paints today?
    If I have the 62 formula how would you go about duplicating it? Is there a conversion chart?

    I don't know about a conversion chart, but obviously color matching is one way. Sherwin Williams for example, still has older paint colors in their system as a good number. In other words "Spruce Tip Green" for example, is readily available in Acrylic Enamel.

    acrylic enamel is what they would have used back then too... well that or a laquer based paint... but they wont sell you laquer anymore... the enamel is very easy to spray and make it look good... and if there is some texture to it when ur done its easy to wet sand out with 1500 grit sand paper.... and you wont have to worry about metalics flacking up bc they are solid colors... if you need help i would lend a hand....

    the paint store by me mixed up a 46 color and it matched exactly like the splotch he had. more impressive to me was that he actually had a 46 willys color splotch... and everything for jeep going through 74.

    i'll chime in again on the acrylic enamel. so far i've painted three jeeps. two have been acryliv enamel and turned out good, the last was a base/clear coat which turned out good as well. the only difference between everything is that the base/clear has little scratches in it from sanding; but it was by far the cleanest before i began painting. it seems (to me) as though the acrylic enamel sprays thicker and will cover up the really small blemishes better.

    Acrylic enamel may or may not be metallic, it just depends on whether or not the color you want is metallic.

    Just got done talking to the local Sherwin Williams dealer. I gave him the original paint code and he said that none of the tints for the original color are made any more. Anyone else have ideas?

    Here in this small town I live in we just go to Napa to get our paint. Believe it or not when I asked the guy if he had "President Red" for a '69 CJ5 he looked it up in his book and said "yep here it is right here". Sure enough he had a book with paint codes in it from every manufacturer way back to the '50's and it had "president red" in it along with all other codes for jeep paint.

    Some of the better auto-body suppliers have a 'reader' which can analyze a paint chip and duplicate it in today's paints. I had my Jeep's "Potomac Grey" done this way before I decided on a more modern "Solar Yellow".
