I have a set of seat belts that came with the jeep. I am trying to figure out if they were the original ones. These are the front seat belts. The thing is they are retractable on one end. Did jeep use retractable belts in 1971? I plan on replacing then with new ones. Any knowledge would help.

If you mean, with a retractor in the base, I don't think so. Mine just lay on the floor, and I think they were all like that at least through 1975.

My '73 may have come with retractors in the middle when new, but if it did, I got rid of them right away and let the belts fall to the floor. With the carpet kit, they don't bounce/rattle or slide around.

On my buddy Steve's 71 project the front belts have re tractors. I'm about 99.9% sure that it was un molested as it was not even on the road for 10 years when it was put in storage.

I've wondered if the non retractable ones on my 64 model are stock. What year were they supplied as original equipment?

I believe it was April of 1970 that it became Federal law. Before that, they were an option.

My '64 Tux came with seatbelts the day my dad brought it home new. The webbing is medium gray color with a heavy weave texture. They have simple unlabelled chrome buckles/latches on one end, and a pair of zinc plated flat hook plates on each end that fastened to the eyebolt on the floor. To attach them to the eyebolt, you had to partly unthread the webbing so you could get each hook, facing opposite directions, around the eye. No retractors on the '64.
