My 67 is home now and I've got drive it a little and clean out the dirt and mouse nests. It has spent it's life in southern New Mexico and the body is straight and very rust free. Problems? The steering is very sloppy and binds so I am going to tackle that issue first. One thing I've found in my research so far is the mention that 67 V6 CJ-5 had a different length shaft than the four banger. My CJ now has a 283 sb so I was wondering if there is any way for me to tell what motor originally came in my Jeep?

If it turns out to be the steering box what are the options, is there rebuilt's available or will I have to rebuild it myself?

vin would tell if it was a 4 or 6
as to steering . you could rebuild it . but with so many moving parts . a steering upgrade would be my first choice

If it is the v6, Kaiser Willys is the only place I found that has the sector shaft...$280 though. I rebuilt mine and rotated the sector studs 90 degrees. I also found a John Deere part number for new sector studs if you want to try that route. Details are in my build thread.

I am also itching to try the JD studs, so maybe let me know what you find on your steering, be glad to put new studs in for you If you want to go that route.

Well I might have dodged a bullet here, I had a few minutes to jack it up and try things with the wheels in the air and it was no better. First thing I did was to remove the aftermarket steering stabilizer...... Bingo! It was practically seized, there is about a 90% improvement in the steering now. Nothing seems loose and there is no noticeable slop in the steering now that it is not under load from the stabilizer. I'll drive it for now as is and see how it goes. The drag link does have a hose clamp on it holding it together, that has to go but maybe the rest is OK. The Jeep did come with a Saginaw power box and a pump maybe one of these days I will try my hand at a conversion.

A bellcrank bushing and new tie rod ends go a long way if it is still drivable as is.
