Hey guys I hate to beat the dead horse. I searched and did not find the answer I was looking for.

I have the stock drivers side heater and want to perform the fan upgrade with a new heater core etc. Will I regret not spending the $$$ on an aftermarket unit like Mohave or a Summit from the get? I gotta ask because If what I got just needs the upgrade to be functional. Saving the wallet and being warm; I'm happy. I been asking around and just got confused.

    Thanks allot.

IMO, you'll never get the stocker to work anywhere close to as good as the Heater Craft (Summit) heater. And for $135, it isn't too expensive.

Yeah, it's common around here to refer to the stock heater as a "placebo heater" because they never work very stellar.
I'm upgrading the Daughter's '70 and my CJ-6 to the Summit heaters for this reason.
I'd put one in the '59/5 but It already has one from a Datsun PU.
I'd suggest if you want it to work well, upgrade.

From what I understand the Summit heater mounts on the passenger side? Do you abandon the drivers side heater and if so how do you plumb in your defrost duct?

You can mount it where ever you want.
I put mine on the passenger side, and left the factory unit completely intact.

I mounted mine in the center. With the summit vent kit and a pvc tee everything hooks up and I got vents at the bottom corners of the dash. It keeps the windshield clear and plenty of heat to driver and passenger.
