I got my order from rock auto and I ordered emergency brake cables for both left and right. Well it was under the correct year of 1975 but it was way to long. I put it in the cable and the other end was touching the back of the block. I returned one and could not return the other due to the thought it was correct length on the driver side rear. It was also to long. I was wondering if the year would be 1975 but using 1974 parts? Any ideas would be great!

Sounds like cj7 cables. Go earlier like 73.

If you ordered from the 1975 page, the catalog is wrong. Looking at the factory parts catalog, the '76 model year has different lengths for each side, and the CJ-5 is the same as the CJ-7. '72-75 have one part number, the same part for both sides.

Just a comment - be really careful using aftermarket parts listings. Maybe the big three are better, but the Jeep listings on RockAuto contain a lot of errors. Usually the errors are listing models, types, and specific parts under years where they were never offered. The employees that put together the listings are not Jeep enthusiasts, and are likely copying from the Hollanders guide and other sources. And RockAuto is just posting the listings that their suppliers provide. Three times removed ... plenty of room for error.

The rear parking brake cables are the same 1972-75, Jeep part number 999 980. If you see a change in the part that does not line up with what you know, check it out in the factory Jeep parts catalog, or post up here and ask. The best way to get the right parts is to look up the Jeep PN and search for that number.

Thanks Tim I really appreciate you insight! Now with the part # 999 980 do you think jeep deal might have that part? Alos do I use that as a cross reference number.

The original Jeep part numbers are nice to have for comparison but don't readily cross to anything in use today. If you are searching NOS stuff on ebay they can help.

Au contraire, I've found that not to be the case. You can use the OEM part numbers in several ways. First, if you enter the number at RockAuto, many times the part will come up. You can cross that part number and sometimes come up with additional brands. I found 999980 on RockAuto - it's an Omix part, but I suspect there is nothing else available. Or, you can put the number with "Jeep" in Google search and very often it will turn up. You can't expect to find much more than the usual service parts for these Jeeps, however. If you need something less common that does not routinely wear out, you likely will need to find a used part, or make a later part do.

I do the same for my old Farmall tractor. I had to buy a PTO bearing the other day and the old tractor parts companies were asking $30+. Got the IH part number from the parts manual, dug around and found the same bearing at NAPA for less than $5. Sometimes you just have to do a little scratching around.
