the speedometer in my '66 cj5 gave up the ghost last week(frozen drive) and looking for a n.o.s. speedo but no luck. lots of omix units for sale but would like some firsthand experience from the jeep cognoscenti before purchasing. thanks in advance!

I just bought an OMIX speedo from KaiserWillys.com. Free shipping, $124 total to my door. Best price I found at the time.

It works great except the fuel gauge is a bit touchy to get working. Little jiggling of the wires on the back here and there to get it to read right. Not sure why.

Also, I couldn't get squat for light in my speedometer, it was very dim, so I pulled it a part and painted the backside of the outer ring white to reflect light onto the speedometer face better. Now the speedo is nice and bright, very easy to read. Also painted the little cardboard tubes white so they diffused the light around them better. Highly recommended cheap mod IMHO. If you only paint the inside of the outer ring, it still looks identical on the outside once you reassemble it.

I also popped out the two green lenses for the lighting while I was at it when it was apart.

Also my temp gauge wasn't reading right. With the aftermarket sender that was in my Buick 231 it was on the cold line fully warmed up. Went and bought a temp sender for a 71 CJ5 with the V6, and then it was on the hot line when warmed up. So I added a few diodes (stuff I had laying around in my garage) to add a very small amount of resistance to get it to read right in the center of the green area when fully warmed up. I ended up stringing 3 of them inline to get it there.

The fuel gauge also reads instantly unlike the original, so as fuel sloshes in the tank, you can see it on the gauge moving the needle. My old fuel gauge didn't do that, but it's all semantics.

I thought Carl Walck had some NOS, 0 - 9 single digit speedos available.
Give them a call at 610-852-3110.

If Walcks doesn't have an NOS 0-9 single digit, try Peter DeBella, he has this NOS unit on the website:

Just put in a Omix today. Getting the bulb sockets to stay in the speedo is a pain.

Haven't got a clue on how accurate it is but it works.

I put an OMIX-ada in my 6. Everything works, but the temp gauge is off. I added an aftermarket mechanical gauge to verify that. The speedometer is also off, readin 65 at 55 mph. I haven't done anything about that yet.

I have an Omix in my cj5. Speedometer, brights indicator, turn signal indicator and fuel gauge is hooked up. IMO the fuel gauge is more decorative than anything else, anything below 1/2 a tank, and it's probably time to get gas. I have the temp, oil pressure and volt meter hooked up to some old aftermarket gauges (came with Jeep, from PO). Works fine.

Have you thought about checking into a speedo shop? I have one here in Grants Pass, OR Name is Ray's Speedo and Electric. he has years of experience, and may possibly rebuild your speedo, he does bench rebuilds and he helped me with mine which is a 1969 cluster. I did a white face upgrade with mine and he went over the gears and reset my odometer since I was doing a restore of my M38A1 to a CJ 5 changing out the dashes. He charged me only $85 for the work, and he is a great source to get in touch he has a vast inventory of old parts for different vehicles and he has reduced his hours of operations due to the fact he is wanting to retire soon so when he does all those parts and his knowledge is gone. let me know if you are interested and I will let you guys know how to get in touch with him. By the way, what I meant by looking over the gears meant he rebuilt them and he has a bench speedo tester to help set the speedo acuracy so he is very thurough in his work, and knows fuel guages and senders, anything you see in your instument cluster, he knows what makes em tick, just letting you know.

I have a few 'for-parts' speedos-- what do you need?
