...to tell the new guy (me) that a '66 Jeep CJ-5 has a 'cable driven' clutch? All I had to do tonight is get under the darn thing and pull one end of the cable off to see it was BAD. I had been dreading working on the clutch all week.

Now, second question. Where is a good place to get one of these cables? Do I need to go to a dealer or can I get it at an auto parts store???

    Many thanks!

    Hey Tom -

One tip for when you get a new cable is to coat that sucker liberally in wheel bearing grease - otherwise they tend to rust out pretty quickly. With the greased version I only went through 1 cable in 18 years.

Thanks for that tip Mike. I'm a real 'babe in the woods' with this thing right now. It actually was a pleasant surprise to see the cable and identify it as the problem area. I guess I'll need to call the dealer and see if I can get one, and how many "Jeep Units" it's going to cost me.

    Tom,
You might want to also check the solid part where it attaches to one of the "ears" on the pedal shaft. Mine had worn its way almost all the way through the ear before I caught it. Found out when I couldn't adjust the clutch any further and it would grind going into gear. I replaced mine with the Advance Adapter chain unit and have not regreted it since. Little pricy, but worth it IMO because of the pedal pressure. People have made them from scratch, but I'm just not that talented. Good luck.

I found someone that has them or at least remanufactures them still. Mile High Jeep Rebuilders out of Denver carries them.

when mine broke, i used the cable off the 4 cyl, and used a grade 8 fine thread bolt (5 inch)to extend it. Use never seize liberally.

Tip of the week- here in Texas, we don't cover anything liberally with grease, it would become 3" thick in greasy dirt in short time while wheelin'. Try some LPS3 rust preventative protectant spray from NAPA. Jeeps don't leak here, they just grow stalagmites of dirt.

Well, I called the local autoparts store and they were unable to find an application for anything older than 1981. So I ordered the clutch cable from JeepDoc.com (KRAGE) for $19.95 plus shipping. Should have it the middle of next week.

    Thanks for the tips guys!

I never have understood the cable thing. On mine there's a piece of all thread rod and I couldn't imagine ever using a piece of cable. The all thread rod is very very simple. Just cut it to fit with a hacksaw and put the nuts on and it's done.

    Or am I missing something?

    Depends on the Jeep John.

The Commando has a cable driven setup IIRC as did the Diesels, hence Boyink's having a cable.

My '71 had a cable from the factory, about 5 ft long!

Is that the cable in the sheath? They used that design on the '72s too.

The earlier cable is a short nekkid one, no?

My cable was a long one, it was wrapped but not such that water and salt (the real culprit) couldn't get through it. FWIW the grease approach really didnt get too caked with dirt here in MI - mostly just dune sand. The placement of the cable was such that it was out of the way most of the time.

Ya know...I neglected to ask about the clutch setup on the '64 '6...

Don't think I will "ditch the cable". I'm not using the jeep to go mud bogging, or dune running, or any of that. Mostly it'll be used to haul myself, trailer and chainsaw to the woods on the back of the farm or to plow the snow off the 900+' of driveway that I maintain, or make an occasional trip down to the hardware store in Frankenmuth. No reason to go through the hassel of retro fitting it with something else, when I can simply install a replacement cable. Oh, and YES it is in a heavy wire wrapped sheath and makes a big horseshoe bend under the body of the jeep.
