I put a new timing chain, timing cover from a Buick 215 on my 225, and a new water pump. I also put a rebuild kit on the oil pump and vasoline in the gears..

I noticed three things, the oil pressure light won't go off so I took the oil filter off no oil and I spun the drill and the distributor shaft. oil comes from the pressure release valve. I stuck a blunt screw driver there and it opens and closes but I don't recall if I spun the drill again..
I took off valve covers and oil is getting to lifters but very little. How much is supposed to be there? keep in mind once I took off filter and put it back on the oil pressure light goes off, but now it stays off?

from reading here, I'm assuming I should have a big mess with valve covers off just by spinning oil pump?
oil pressure light is now off with no pump spinning does this mean that there is a clog somewhere in oil system? If there is im thinking gasket is covering oil gallery hole

any recommendations for my next step?

I don't know it it applies to the 225s or not but my 231 had almost no readable pressure at idle once it warmed up. Once the throttle is touched, it would come up to normal readings. I've read on other forums that this is a common problem with these engines. I followed advice I found on a Buick site and added STP oil treatment recently. So far, it seems to be holding pressure at idle, though it hasn't been out of the neighborhood yet.

So if you are only looking at the residual oil volumes left behind under the covers after only running the pump with a drill, it's possible that is about normal?

225 don't shoot oil all over the place because oil doesn't come up the pushrods like, say for example, a Chevy does. It more or less oozes out the rocker shaft to lubricate the rockers.

The Factory V-6 aluminum oil pump covers have too much clearance between the gears and the bore and as they wear the end clearance also goes away which makes low RPM oil pressure suffer.
One solution is a high volume oil pump kit from T.A. Performance in Arizona whereby a new set of 350 V8 oil gears is supplied. These are about 1/4" taller than the stock V-6 gears and a spacer and shims is supplied to install in your stock cover...............The kit also comes with additional oil relieve springs to tailor your oil pressure needs. TA also sells complete new covers that they have made that have undersized bores that they bore in house and close up the clearance to increase the idle and running pressure.............The 1/4" high volume kit is nothing new as I have ran one for many years in my odd fire with no issue. Makes about 25 lbs at Idle.

yes, the oil just kinda oozed out of the rocker shaft slowly. how much should it ooze?

I did crank the engine over and was listening for any weird noises (clacking) and nothing, its quieter than before.

yes there is a lot of residual oil on lifters and such, but I did see fresh oil slowly seeping from rockers.

there was very little wear on cover, I replaced gears though.

I'm thinking I should get an actual oil pressure gauge? any recommendations on type on the cheap side?

I had nothing but problems with a high volume pump. Chewed up distributor gears among other things.

I ended up with a stock V6 pump using TA Performances shims for proper depth and an adjustable oil pressure regulator with great results.

If you want t mount it permanently in your Jeep, get a quality gauge. Just go to Summit Racing and sort the gauges by price. I have this one in the CJ-6 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/atm-2421/overview/ but I had this in my CJ-5 and liked it better - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-82322/overview/

Summit has some cheap S-W gauges that might be ok for a while http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-122271/overview/ - though the price is as cheap as Equus, so I suspect the quality is at that level. If you want cheap, look for Equus or Sunpro (not a rec, but an observation).

If you go mechanical, installation is critical. Either the nylon or copper installation kit will work. I had a nylon kit in my CJ-5, but I protected the entire length of the tubing with vacuum hose.

I got a oil pressure gauge because the oil sensor went out. And oil pressure goes up with drill so I think I'm good with that issue on to putting in distributor.

Thanks guys, I was real worried for a while.
