hopefully this is not a stupid set of Questions I have a57 m38a with hard top and plow as far as i know it has the original L head i can't find the oil filter canister that is usually on a L head. The hydraulic pump for the plow is there and there is nothing around that area. the only thing that looks like a filter has coolant lines going to it. also what grade and weight of oil should i use. i have sent pics. have had other people look it over it"s not just me that is at a loss any help would be great. the engine runs too well to have not been filtered all these years.A friend just called and said some of the older ones don't have filters any truth to that? Hard to tell what has been swapped over the years, but that is not the stock engine. The engine you have is indeed an L-head, which would be original for a flatfender Jeep, whereas your Jeep had an F-head engine.

It was very common to remove the oil filter assembly in order to mount the plow hydraulics, but I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of filter. The fileter system on these engines is only a "bypass" system, meaning it does not filter 100% of the oil flow in the engine.

You could reinstall the bypass system with longer hoses, but you could probably do just as well changing the oil regularly.
