I am getting ready to do some work on my 66 CJ5 (rebuild of my tired 225 V6 ) and was curious if you can find a used 71 offset Dana 44 rear axle with the flanged axles?? I have some digging but have not had any luck with a used unit. If nothing else just the housing would be a start. I currently have 3:73 gears in mine and can use my gears with a different carrier probably go with a posi anyway.
    thanks
    Mike

They are out there, not easy or cheap to find.

You keep your nose to the ground and you follow every lead.
Some folks don't realize the value of what they are; most true Jeep folks do.
Sometimes you'll have to buy a pile of parts or a rolling frame to get what you want.
Sometimes you'll drive 100-500 miles if you are serious about one. I have.
Or have it shipped across the country. I've done that as well.
It's like being a parts picker.
I always enjoy the journey of the search.

Have you considered building a full-floater from the axle you have?

I am trying to keep a kinda stock apperance. My concern is when i build my new motor (225 v6) i am putting a comp cam (246), offy intake and a 390 holley on it. I am worried that if i ever put a posi in the rear i might shear one of the axle keys? I have never had a problem with them since i have owned the jeep for 20+ yrs. I don't typically play hard but i want to be able to get out if i need too without hopefully breaking something. I will probalby never go with a bigger tire than i run now 31-10.5 x 15"

Sounds to me like you are careful enough to never break anything. I believe you could also use a drive flange if you went to full floating axles in the rear, which would make it look more stockish. Plenty of guys on here know what is available.

Funny man!!!!!!!!!! surely between KS and WA there are a couple laying around!!! Though i found one a couple of weeks ago but it was about 1" too wide, must have been out of a scout?? Maybe i need to go back and get some more measurements and see if it could be made to work. Not sure of the offset and it had shock mounts on it too. (easy to cut off)

There was one for sale at Olympic 4x4 in Snohomish Washington about 2 weeks ago. Probably still available. Don't know what they wanted for it.

There was also a full floater under one of the jeeps still out in the yard. The floater had 4.27's in it, and I think the flanged one had 4.88's. The matching front ends were still in the yard.

I'm hoping to find a whole Jeep with the correct axles for close to that price. Do an axle swap and sell.

I called too, they'll hold it for me and I just happen to be planning a trip near that area. I don't think I can stomach the $ considering it's half the price of what I paid for my Jeep 8 months ago.

I already broke the axle I have. That's how I learned I didn't have the "correct" axle.

It might not have been so bad but when I am still going to have to change out gears and pay freight it was too much to stomach. I can buy a housing with new good Dutchman axles from R&P for 1250. Still too steep for the toy budget. I was hoping for something in the under $500 range as a rebuildable core. I picked up the Scout Dana 44 (kinda offset but not the same as a CJ). on the way home tonight it has the posi tag on it and it looked like it had never been apart for $50. Thought I was getting a smoking deal for a 3 series posi !!!! Got it home and it was a single spinner oh well it has the 6-hole backing plates for the flanged axle so it was not a total loss. Still need to scatter to see what the axles are like.
When bought mine I put new hubs and keys and have not had a problem yet. Most of my playing had been in the mud. We don't have any mountains around here!!! Planning a trip to the Rockies in Colorado in August so I guess I will see how it does. I will probably take a spare hub and key (puller too) with me just in case!!
    Mike
