I’m interested in this as well.

My gauge fluctuates between 140 (when driving) and 180 (when idling). Stewart Warner gauge on a 198 v6. I think the issue is that the location of the temp pickup is right in front of the fan. So it reads cooler than the rest of the motor when the fan is spinning fast.

I have 2 CJ5s both with V6s.....one with a shroud one without. In the hot AZ summer both run at 180 ish....except on the one without the shroud if idling at a traffic light the temp will climb to 200....205. Once I start moving the temp goes back down to 180. Both have mechanical gauges. I always figured without the shroud the fan is pushing the same air back and forth thru the Rad.

The one without the shroud has a 180 thermostat....the one with has a 160. I believe 180 is the OE temp
