Now That The Engine Is Back.....

So now that the engine is back from the rebuilder, I'm taking off a few pieces to get powder coated before I stab it back in. However, I noticed there are a number of plugs in the head and I'm curious what they were used for back in 58. For example, on the back of the head where that oil line goes up the back corner of the head there is a plug.

Then there is one at the back of the head on the passenger side which I'm pretty sure goes to factory heater if installed.

And there are 2 in the water pump vs my original pump only had the larger one on the passenger side, which again is for the factory heater, if installed. Plus one in the front of the head. So what is the extra one in the water pump and head?

And finally, it looks like there is another one down low in the middle on the driver's side in line with the one for the oil pressure guage.

 

Bypass hose was OEM. A short 90º hose.

That's where the oil passage to the rocker arm stand was drilled at the factory.

That's where the oil passage for the center camshaft bearing was drilled through the main oil galley.

 

'Drilled' meaning they had to drill from the outside just to get the passage but then plug where they had to do the drilling? Why not just use that hole with a 90 degree brass adapter instead of then having to drill and tap for the external oil line? Just trying to understand.

 

Yep, most older engines have at least a couple of plugs like this. The f-head has more than most: three plugs on the side of the block for the camshaft passages, one one the head, two on the center main web for the oil pump passages and one at each end of the main oil galley (behind the cam gear and the rear plate). I probably forgot a couple.
