Novak vs. AA D18 Intermediate Shaft Kit

    It looks like I'm going to have to replace Tonka's transfer case due to a broken mounting tab from the accident. As I'll have to tear down the replacement to check it out & replace whatever & as those &$%(# needle bearings whining away bug me I'm considering either the Novak or AA intermediate shaft upgades.

    Anybody have any recommendations/comments/rants/raves on either one of these?

    I would go with Novak because they are just excellent to work with.

    I'll second what Dan said....Novak. They had great customer service and even a mechanical idiot like me did the replacement without too much trouble. :shock:

    I'd go with the Novak kit. Excellent parts and service. I finished rebuilding the D18 with the Novak kit about a month ago.

    Go with the Novak. Erik is great to deal with. Also, the AA kit, I assume you mean the tapered bearing conversion, requires machine work to the case if I remember correctly and shimming. Keep it simple and serviceable. You'll be much happier in the long run. Nickmil.

    Novak. Their intermediate shaft with the o-rings works great.

    Novak's premium intermediate shaft is machined to accept o-rings at each end of the shaft. Each o-ring location is designed to mate with the case, providing a better, leakproof seal between the shaft and the case. Works for me :)
    You didn't put them on?
    Wait, you don't have the 1 1/4" shaft, do you? I'm thinking (but not sure) that only their premium 1 1/4" shaft gets the o-rings...

    The Novak 1 and 1/8 " shaft has o-rings too. Billy, didn't you get the Novak shaft? Seems like I'm remembering you measured yours and it's the 1 and 1/4"?

    The o-rings are nice, but mine got kinda chewed up because of the tight fit between the case and the shaft. So for good measure I out some RTV around the shaft where it meets the case. Its sealed great at the shaft, but it still leaks elsewhere :rofl:
