I have been out of commission for a few months with shoulder surgery. I have worked on a few minor things: Seat adjuster for the driver, seat belts for the back seat and so on. I convinced my wife to sew up a safari top. I am using the bows and rods from the original top that came with it. They are from a tiger top. Thought the photos might tell a better story.
    First fit.

Here is where we are now. Getting ready to install the front snap. After that will be the reinforcement (button holes) for the straps from the back bow to the tub. (while I am posting this I can hear my wife talking to the sewing machine upstairs. I bet we go out for dinner...)

Have you got snaps at the rod behind the door opening?.......When I built my safari top for my 6 I used cinch straps in the back and center/ sides........The material stretches in the heat and the noise is almost unbearable on the road

Yes. I plan for snaps on both bows on both sides. Further progress:

    Thanks.

    Come by anytime, John.

After this top I don't know if I will be able to get her to do anything jeep related. Of course she was kind of that way after she sewed the upholstery about 5 years ago. Once we get this complete I am going to convince her to do a half cab. we shall see if that works. :D

Today the skaters came on the Olympics. Sorry I just can't get into that. So I headed out to the garage.

I have driven about 2-300 miles since getting registration (2 years or so). I noticed that the RF tire was wearing a little so I measured and set the toe-in today. I had never done that and thought it would be more difficult than it was. It was about 1" difference so I was able to get it to within tolerances. Hopefully that will help.

Nothing new on the top. I am hoping to finish that soon.

    Mark,

I told my son to pause live TV for a little while......

Then we can pick it back up and fast fwd through the figure skating and watch the commercials. :)

    So true!

If my wife sees enough skating she might agree to start working on the top. So for now she drives the remote.

Yesterday was pretty amazing. My wife sewed up the driver side to finish up the top. I am super pleased. I took it out today :driving:and it does not jump or make noise. I did switch back from wide bungee cords to fixed straps on the back. The bungee cords flexed allowing the rear bow to jump up and down.

My original objective was to have a safari top just to keep the sun off. I think this did the trick. I used a tiger top frame including the iron bars from the middle bow to the windshield. She sewed a pocket for that rod.

Sorry. I am having difficulty restoring this after the photobucket FIASCO.

On the center bow there are two 6" loops sewed in to keep the top from jumping up and down.

The rear bow has a pocket as well as a button hole type slot for the two straps in the rear. I tried a wide bungee cord here but it did not pass the wind test. You can also see the snaps installed at the front bow and windshield on this view.

Each side has a pocket sewn in the entire length of the top. I put a small steel rod in there to stiffen up the edge of the top. I don't know if I will retain the rods or get a wooden dowel. I am afraid the dowel would break where it flexes around the front bow.

Here are a few shots of the completed top. I think the most difficult part was not having a pattern to use. I sure have a great wife to work so hard on this. :)

Awesome job on the 6! I've been following your build since you picked it up! Sorry I never made it over when I lived down in Ft Worth. Hopefully I'll have mine on the road again soon….
