The time for mock up is over.....
I tacked my upper and lower hinge mounts together. Then drilled my holes at once.

I drilled and tapped the grease fitting.

Close up of the hinge bracket. There will be 4 3/8" bolts through the face and two 5/16" bolts through the top and bottom of the channel.

I got a little more done last night.
8 bolts holding the pivot bracket on.

Looks plenty strong...........Might want to think about using some Ny-loc Locknuts on all that stuff.........as those standard nuts will come loose.

That's the plan. Once everything is reassembled after paint it will get lock nuts and washers all around.

    I'm ready to start swinging!
    The tire carrier that is......
Last night was productive. I clamped a piece of angle iron on the vertical post to get the wheel plate height set.

I have a small about of flex in the 4" channel iron cross member. Between the carrier hinge bracket and the frame attachment point for the channel. I will add gussets on the backside here. I know that the pic is hard to see, but I think that a couple of 1.5" x 1/8" flat bar, drawn in red, would keep the channel from twisting. Its not allot of twist, But I don't want it to eventually wear on the corner body mount. The flat bar would also be welded to the 2" channel bracket that bolts the cross member to the frame.

    Looking good.

Question... Are you planning on adding more accessories to the carrier? If no, why not have a shorter horizontal bar?

I will be adding a high lift, axe, shovel and a fold down table.
One thing to remember is that with the longer horizontal bar, you move the pivot point closer to the outside of the body. This allows you to swing the tire carrier open more before the tire hits the body. I was hoping to be able to swing the spare out 180 degrees. I did not factor in the tire to body contact. I can only get about 150 degrees which in reality is fine. If you were only wanting to swing 90 degrees, you could have the horizontal bar be just about the same length as your tire diameter.

    Cool.
I meant, cut the horizontal bar off at the vertical joint (L shaped system) and keep everything else the same.

Can't wait to see more progress.

Did you know another member is also posting his carrier build too?

Coming along nicely............on the ones I've built I found that a plate gusset or another piece of tube like 1.5" square running from just below the tire carrier down to where you're ball bearing pin is helps to stabilize that tire upright from moving around while driving or off road.

Yes, His is coming along nicely.
The main reason for the T shape that I am using is for the accessories and fold down table that I will eventually be adding.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm still on fence from when I was thinking about one. Now that I have a hardtop to mount, I may go back to the carrier idea.

Here's when I was contemplating what to do with an example carrier you might like?

Yes, I like the carrier in the second pic and I like their license plate. I have spent hours looking at pics online to get ideas.

Nice job with the carrier :)

Are you putting a third brake light into the center of the rim?

If so, don't forget that you need to tap the wire into the brake light switch. If you use one of the tail light it will flash when you will use you're flasher (yes i did this first prior to realise my error)

I will have a third brake light in the middle of the spare. It's a Led/ reflector combo.

    Latch side is getting closer.
I can see why real quality swing out tire carriers are so expensive!
I built a ramp for the lower pad. If the horizontal arm sags, the ramp should guide it up to the pad. I don't currently have any sag, it just seemed like a good idea.

I need to get a jamb nut for the adjustment. It looks crooked in the pic to me, its not in real life.

Latch end is complete. I welded the nuts inside the tube before capping it off.

Ramp in the event of sag. There currently is none.

    All done with this side.

Here is the rectangular pad. McMaster-Carr
    Round adjustable stop. McMaster-Carr
Toggle clamp for the latch. I went with the 2000lb double locking McMaster-Carr
    Pivot bushings. McMaster-Carr
Example of round tube for the pivot. It can be purchased cheaper local to you. McMaster-Carr
