I got the jeep back from the frame shop, they got it as good as they can get it without completely stripping the frame bare and going to town on it. I tackled the tilt steering column install this last weekend. I think it came out pretty good, I still have to finish it up but here are the rough pics. [IMG][IMG]
I still have to finish up my lower floor mount, but it will consist of a flat plate 4"x5" with a 2" diameter shaft collar welded to it.

Tackled my passenger side floor pan over the weekend. It came out pretty good, I still need to knock the welds down and put some seam sealer on the underside. Hopefully this week I can complete the drivers side and get the floorboards and frame painted over the coming weekend. I ended up reinforcing the hat channels with 1 1/2" Flat stock welded full length down the inside and patch pieces for the rusted out sides. Before the floor was flimsy and now you can jump on it!

Finished up the passenger side, but didn't take any pictures of it. The drivers side was much worse that the passenger. P.O. had done some backyard rust repair with way too many layers of fiberglass. I first removed all of the floor pan, and then cut the rust out of the rocker. The cowl support was rusted out where it met the floor as well. I am hoping to finish the floor and rocker panel tonight. I'm not sure why there is so much bondo on the drivers side; there is so much underneath the jeep emblem that it is higher than the rest of the body.

My plan is to restore the structural integrity of the rocker and then put diamond plate rocker guards over it. I don't want to try to match the paint on the jeep, some day it will get the entire thing blasted, ect.... but for now Im going to run it with a little patina. Adds character!

lots of progress on the jeep over the holidays. Floor pans and rocker are all welded in and the summit heater is installed. When the P.O. installed the saginaw 4 speed, he put the shifter in the worst location for gas pedal to foot comfort. I moved it back 2.5" and down 3" to give ample foot room. The shifter in now completely under the floor. Moving the shifter also required me to make new shift rods, which needed attention either way, and a new shift lever as well. I ordered a wiring harness from Northwest auto wire and I am very pleased with it so far. I'm happy to be past the dirty parts and be on to the assembly.

Summit tilt column is installed. I cant stand the feel of the small 13" steering wheel. Ill be notching the wheel well soon and upgrading to a min 14" wheel.

Nice Job............I think you'll like the feel of a 14" wheel although with non-power steering it may be a workout? Wheel well notch is your only option with those seats to get some more room. Or a more traditional low back seat would also help but that's another story...............Again , looks Good.

    Tarry,
I am working on a 2.5" or 3" wheel notch now, For the steering I may go to a 15" wheel, that's what I have in my race cars. It takes time to really get the fit right, I'm just feeling it all out now, leaving room for adjustment after I get it back on the road. Kinda like a full containment race seat, takes several outings to get it just perfect.
The heater box is from summit. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-991102-1

    More Progress!
I really don't like how modern high back seats look in an old jeep, but they are very functional and provide lots of support for bouncing around. The previous owner had mounted them in a way that didn't allow access to the tool box. I revamped the old bracket, and with the wheel house notch, it is accessible by first sliding the seat all the way forward, then unpinning it on the front. Easy solution. I was also able to get the inner fenders and the rear of the interior coated with trunk paint.

The Interior is black and teal trunk paint with 4 coats of satin clear to make it durable. Some people don't like it, but I think it looks nice. Its not near as heavy as bed liner, but it covers up all of the imperfections. I have photo proof that there's no rust under it.

Excellent work. Tilting the seat backwards to access the tool box is a new idea, to me at least. Pretty cool. I like it.

Real nice work and its coming out very nicely. Keep it going, your inspiring me to get back out in the ICE barn to get working on mine again. I stopped two weeks ago when it got down in the minus zero numbers. Every time I open the barn door to add light, the cows bumb rush me to get inside. They have been over seeing the work at times.

    Mass,
I don't know about the 2a, but in the cj5, the dodge radiator fits perfectly. I had to notch mine to clear my steering shaft. I could have gotten away with mounting it higher but wanted a custom fit.

On a side note, I should be driving the jeep tonight!
