Note to self: check the power to the coil first.

If I'd done that I would have saved myself a couple hours of parts swapping, head scratching and bad words.

I finally put the meter on the + terminal and found no juice, so started checking wires. When I unwrapped the electrical tape from a crimp splice behind the instrument panel, the two ends of the wire fell apart. The tape was the only thing holding it together.

New splice, spark, engine running nicely. Faith in the '53 restored once again, apologies to it for those things I said.

Don't like those crimp splices so I'll be replacing the wire today.

The main problem with a lot of vehicle owners is a lack of understanding the circuit path of electrical power. Very basic electrical knowledge is needed but a plan of attack is important. Glad you didn't pull the transmission and radiator like some would looking for an electrical problem.
