I have a 64 f134 that had the same symtoms..
I replaced the "new Japanese plugs" that a mechanic
had installed, with Champion j8c plugs, put a new
Bosch coil on and it runs smooth as silk now..
I'm pretty sure the coil was not putting the
right voltage out.. It was old as me probaly...
    Good luck..:)

Thats great. I haven't got my problem competely solved yet. It is running much better and I don't notice the stumbling as much since I took the glasspacks off and added the Thrush mufflers. I haven't been able to mess with it much here lately since it has been so cold here. After the holidays I am going to get back at it, and see if I can figure it out. The stumbling only happens at low RPM,s and it will back fire sometimes during deceleration. If I could cure the back fire I would be happy. It scares the sh#t out of me everytime and I know it is coming.

Re read post 78 and 31. Also you may want to check your timing chain as posted earlier. These kind of problems can drive you nuts. Wish you the best of luck. Please let us know what how it comes out.

Hi, been gone for a few days.
DonX, that's an interesting thread that I found too, but it mostly seems to apply to the Carter YF's. Applies to all carbs as well.
I worked on the carb on the 225 in my 3B this afternoom, stumling, coughing, etc.
Cleaned around the accel pump area, checked the check ball and readjusted the linkage to the pump shaft, lengthened it a bit.
    Much better now.
Just for referance, the main jets are 0.048's in this carb., at 4600ft.

This might sound obvious but have you checked for leaks everywhere? You need unburnt fuel and a little fresh air to backfire.. maybe you knocked the headers loose or something? Mine seem to always wiggle loose now and then.

I can't recall if you had a 225 with duals or what, but if you could isolate the problem to one side or the other it might help.. Eg, does it always pop on the left side...?

I had a strange miss which I finally found was a bad (cracked ceramic around the electrode) factory sparkplug.

Oh, I just reread some posts. Sounds like it was the passenger side bank and you checked for loose headers. Did you ever check the compression level of all the cylinders? I don't think anyone has mentioned valvetrain and a compression check would rule that out. Good luck!

I did check the compression. I just ordered the pertronix ignitor, flame thrower coil, and everything I need to be able to do a disc brake conversion on the front end. All of this should keep me busy for a little while. My next project will be to tackle the saginaw steering conversion. That one scares me a little. Hopefully the electonic ingition with the flamethrower coil will solve the backfire problem. I drove the jeep a couple days ago an it is running really good. So if I can cure the back fire I will be very happy.

I got the pertronix flame thrower coil on and the ignitor dialed in tonight. I started it up and it sounds like she is running much better. Even my wife noticed. I was so happy I had to have her come down and listen to it. I haven't been able to take it out of the garage yet because the disc brake conversion is still in progress. Just now got finished up in the garage and having a wild new years. WOoooooooooooohooooooooooooo happy new year, man I am getting old.

This raises a red flag for me. My neighbor used to have a 68 CJ5 with the V6 than ran like crap. He did a lot of work including a new distributor. After he had done everything he could think of I loaned him the distributor out of my 67. It ran perfectly. I wasn't sure I was going to get it back.

I don't remember if he got a distributor for an even fire engine or not, but it took him a few tries at the parts store to get one that worked correctly.

I don't think he knew exactly what was wrong with the other distributors.

I assume you installed the plug wires with the #1 plug wire in the marked #1 position in the cap. As you have an odd fire engine, it does make a difference.

    John
