This is what it looked like when we dragged it home from Indy. It's now in pieces in the shop.

I want to do it bright yellow, wife has other ideas. Then again, she's not the one painting it .

Yellow sounds good to me. Doesn't work on every vehicle, and my wife use to not like it on Jeeps. However I always liked the looks of yellow Jeeps and pointed out some great looking ones over the years. She likes and points them out herself now. It will look good on your Half-Cab. Notice you have a Hurst addition as well. Have seen them in the Jeep books. It is amazing how the red and blue strips just in the right place can make a good looking vehicle even better.
I hope to paint mine Gun Metal Blue. Saw the color about 9 or 10 years ago on a Jeep in Colorado for the first time and liked it. I hope to paint the J4000 and Commando both that color.
Thanks for posting that picture, looks like a good one to start with, not to bad of shape now.

Yes the pictures are very inspirational.
You know, with Ford going with the retro look of it's Mustang, and being so successful; Dodge trying it with the Challenger and Chevy with the Camaro, I wish Jeep would do the same thing. The Dealership's are packed with the new Wranglers which they can't seem to move very well. My wife and I where saying just the other day that Jeep would sell tons of Jeepster Commando's if they made it look enough like the older styles. And if they are worried about gas prices and mileage, they could go real retro and make a 2-wheel drive Jeepster Convertible like the Willies version. But I don't think people worry so much about gas prices and mileage when it is something that really have a passion for. Muscle cars still sell. If it looks good enough, people will buy it.
Along those lines, your Commando looks great and your set up with the tough transmission and D20 twin stick is a great idea. I picked up another D20 one time to salvage parts, and rebuild mine with the twin stick. But I never followed through. It was going to be for my J truck. I ended up mating the gear box from a NP203 to a 205 to get 4:1 gear reduction. I didn't really need it, just wanted to see if I could do it. My D20 was slipping out of 2 high into neutral at the time. thought I wouldn't be able to find replacement parts if I were to rebuild it. Come to find out it may have just been a little bend in one of shifters linkage. I took it off and hammered it a bit, never had another problem.
Thanks again for sharing the photos. Does help motivate me. Hope mine comes out looking half as good as your "69.

I really enjoyed looking at your photo album. Man, sure wish I had gotten involved with a Jeepster a long time ago when I was younger and could spend money whenever and on whatever I wanted. So many things that can be done with them: They look good stock, hard top or soft, station waggon or half cab and they look good lifted; your LED taillight conversion is very cool. I remember reading your thread after you got the D30 front end in and new bumper along with the dash modifications; the CJ speedometer and gauges is going to be great.
Your Jeepster looks good with just primer right now, but what color or colors are you thinking of painting it?

I have a buddy who's workmate just did a full camo wrap on his truck and has enough left over to do my Jeepster.
    very expensive stuff.
They say his truck was around 1500.00
It's thicker for in the woods.

Going to let me have it for a good price and they will install it.
They both work at a fancy bodyshop.

It's Mossy Oak which I like so scraping some extra $$ togehter for it now.

The interior and top will be Flat OD Green.

Figuring by my buddy's advice I have around 300 hours of body work to paint it right so this would be way better.
Was going to go with a flat tan camo color.

So pretty excited but dont have it yet...

The Camo paint will look great. Like I said earlier; some colors just go well with certain vehicles, and Commandos look good in just about any. But the name of the vehicle and that style of paint seem to be made for each other.
Just a little related to the subject: I will have to do a little body work once I get mine, and also some on the truck as well as frame work. I have an oxy-acetylene torch and a cut off tool. I know the torch will be to much heat for sheet metal, but could probably get by with a cut off tool and or grinders for frame work. But I have heard good things about plasma cutters. I would have to save several months to justify buying one. Those I've looked at are around $700 to $800. Don't know how often I would use one; although seems they will cut 1/4 inch steel as well. Could use it for more than just Jeep projects.
The ones I've seen at local Farm and Home stores have been Lincoln and Hobart.
Any thoughts and or advice you could share as to (1) Is it worth the money for a weekend hobbyist like me with occasional use, or just stick to torch and grinders? (2) If looking for one, what brand, specifications and cost to consider?

I use cutoff wheel and grinder alot.
    Also 220 mig welder.
Wish I had a band saw would be nice.
Plasma would take alot to justify for me.
    Probably buy a torch next.
have plans and half the stuff to build my own tube bender this winter.

Thanks for the input Trick Patrick.
Plasma cutter would be nice, but like you say; would take a lot of use to justify.
Sounds like I have enough tools for now.
Making your own tubing bender would be great.
Would like to be able to do that myself and make a good roll-cage for my Wrangler.

Unfortunately, that was 2003 (hince the low gas prices) after the Jeepster JAM in Boone, NC... which will be held again this year in the Boone area (Jeepster JAM 2008 inValle Crusis, NC)

If your *real* interested, Aarons yellow Jeepster is for sale (at least he's hinted at wanting to sell it)
