Are you going to return to the original yellow with Renegade stripes?

No I didn't have the block "professionally" checked out but it ran fine and had good compression when I tore it down. My Dad and I have rebuilt a few engines over the years when he was racing Northwest tour and it looked really good to him and I. just cleaned it really good and did a hone job on the cylinders. I used a thread on here about rebuilding the v6 but the name of the poster escapes me at the moment. It was a really good walk through. I then replaced all the bearings and re-ringed it. Honeywells, yeah I'm that guy. Stop by anytime, as long as I'm not terribly busy I've got time to talk Jeeps. Zoomer; yes its going back to the Prairie gold color with the Renegade stripes. It was kind of a hard decision as I'm restoring it in memory of my grandfather and he obviously wanted it brown but i think the historical value is more important color wise. Restoring the Jeep in general is good homage to him.

So I got into the Ross steering box this weekend figuring i would probably need to fix the pins on the sector shaft and found this.

Now I need a new sector shaft completely. The splines are twisted to a point that I'm surprised it didn't fail and the bushing surfaces are worn badly. I'm not coming up with much in the way of replacement parts for the V6 Ross box on the web so maybe some one has a box they took off when upgrading their steering or can point me in a direction for replacement parts?

Got one from Peter DaBella a year or so ago. Somehow I crossed it to a sector shaft for a M38A1 (don't remember how-- It is a bitch getting old) Anyway it matched the old one. Mine was for a V6 Ross Box as well with the shorter shaft. I have the old one if you want to pay the freight you can have it, might be a bit better that you have, but hard to tell in the pics.

you are correct. the the steering box for a m38a1 is used in jeeps with a v6. it uses a shorter sector shaft for extra clearance for the v6

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Forum Fiend v1.1.3.

Yeah it should be a V6 box but all the measurements i get off of the shaft show it to be a standard box. Easier to get parts I guess but a little mystery for me. Maybe grandpa killed the original box and just replaced it with a standard box or it was built that way, I don't know.

heres what i have for shaft diameter. .8740" or roughly 7/8"

    1.5" across the pin centers

    And 6 1/8" oal

thanks for all the compliments, its definitely a labor of love

Wow I can't believe it's been another year since I posted any progress.
I have been busy on the Renegade in between side projects for clients. The chassis and drivetrain are essentially complete minus a few engine components like the starter, fuel pump, distributor and alternator. Purchased a wiring harness through Walck's and with the help of Mnemonics wiring diagram and the old harness added the Renegade specific circuits. I think it turned out really well and will be hard for someone to realize it isn't original.
Top harness is the new one and bottom harness is the old one. Something in the old harness shorted and burned the ammeter circuit from the gauge on.
Here is a photo from about Sept. of last year with the drivetrain in. It is not current with the harness roughed in or some of the other work.
Lastly a photo Grandma dug up of the rollover 28 days after Grandpa purchased it. Showing the damage and more importantly the original color.

One of the first things I did when I took the body off was to replace the complete front floor section. I was never completely happy with the floor as it was from the 72 and up style tub. It had the embossments in the floor that were not correct and didn't have the factory fuel tank patch plate. I have been working on correcting these parts of the floor and stripping the body in preparation of getting it painted and hope fully assembled before the end of the year.

Speaking of Renegade I colors for 1970... Does anyone know if the stock hood latches are supposed to be chrome or painted gray? The ones on mine have been painted black but I don't think that was the original color. Thanks.

Silver-gray. The aftermarket latches are black ... at least the pair I bought are black.

Update, The wiring harness has been modified and completed to match the original and installed, just finished rebuilding the distributor. By the way the distributor gear is not that easy to find here apparently, had to rob it off the new R1's distributor.

I have also completed the floor install and modifying it to appear original with the fuel tank "patch" panel the factory did to these tubs.

Hopefully with the long 3 day weekend I can get it timed and started for the first time in many years. Still need to do the body work in preparation of paint, which I'm not really looking forward to but will get through it. Getting close to being done with this project so I can enjoy it and start on it's new twin.

Hi Carter, I see you have the same reflectors on the hood that I do. George daughter Diana thought they were interesting the first time she saw mine & didn't seem too sure they were original.
