    rejeep- Sorry it took so long. I drove the Jeep to work today so it was light out to take some pics... Hope this is what you were after. it's pretty simple. They mount on the inside and are cut out for bolt clearance on the early jeeps.

    After pulling this thing multiple times with very different results everytime I changed the shimming, I went back to square one. Removed all the shimming and bolted the barrel gear back in for a little better inspection. What I found was a lot of play between the gear and the pinions..... Not good. On full disassembly of the barrel gear I found wasted main bearings.

    All the needles just fell out on disassembly. Not sure what I did wrong or if the shimming caused some of this but at any rate is wasn't something I wanted to find on the Tuesday night before a saturday run. Luckily the ones I pressed out were in decent shape when I went thru it 1.5 yrs ago and I had them in a box of parts I saved in the attic. I dug those out, pressed em in and voila! She works better than she did after the refresh. I'll take it!

    very nice! great thread to wasted the morning reading at work! Very excited to get my flatfender going! finishing up some house projects this week so I can get back to getting the CJ5 driving before I pull the body for the willys body swap. Just waiting on the new rear wheel cylinders to arrive. The old ones were ceased. $60 for the pair at the store, and only $21 for the pair on ebay!

    So do you think that the replacement bearings in the OD were poor quality? bad installation? shimming messed them up? keep a close eye on it. There still may be something wrong with the transmission/ Tcase/OD/ oiling that is causing that bearing to fail.

    I think maybe the shimming caused the bearing problem....or since this is a dualmatic and not a Warn, the replacements weren't quite right? It's almost back to 100%. Popped out once on our last wheeling trip on me. Not sure where to go from here with it.

    Tcase bearings? If the internals of the Tcase are shimmying around in the case, it could be promoting that OD to pop out

    The owner of Olympic 4x4 Supply had those made a long time ago... Not sure if he still has any. It took me awhile to ge tmine on magnets.

    Pulled the head off to fix a coolant leak out the back...... It's cracked in 3 places. I ordered a new head that arrived yesterday, but it has some differences compared to the old head. Mostly to do with water passage shapes. I think I can make it work.

    I'm leaving for Colorado with it this weekend.... At this point I'm at a crossroads. I don't have time to make the new head work, nor do I have time to fix the old one. I'm much more comfortable running the old head one last trip, than I am rushing thru the obstacles the new head has presented. Some of the lifters/pushrods don't fit the bores, I have water passages that are slightly off and extra ones that need to be blocked off and one that needs to be drilled. The old head came off for a leak unrelated to the cracks. I know it runs with the cracks and reliably runs with the cracks. Bad decision? Probably..... Will it work? I'll let you know when I return.... or don't. :) Wish me luck!

    Well..... Colorado was beautiful, but my jeep no longer runs..... Nothing related to the head stuff. I put the fan through the radiator and subsequently overheated it trying to get back to civilization. Like anything mechanical, It will be repaired eventually. It still turns over, would still run on the side of the road albeit very badly. Looking at probably a full engine rebuild at this point. :(

    Edit: Or a running replacement motor. ;)

    That sucks but at least you got it back home. Sucks even more broken in the woods and no way out.

    I purchased a "supposed to run, previous owner said it was rebuilt recently" used indirect injection 4.203 Perkins yesterday. Aside from the bore size, there seems to be very little if any difference from the 4.192. All the Jeep specific accessories look like they will simply swap over onto the 4.203. It will add +3hp and 4ft lbs..... lol. Big numbers! But I should have the thing running again by the end of the year providing all goes as planned. I need to save up some $$ to have the injection pump and injectors out of the 4.192 gone through before I put them into the new engine. The 4.192 will get tucked into a corner until I can get it rebuilt properly.

    It arrived while I was gone. Looks like it made the journey from Oklahoma City to Washington in one piece. These suckers are heavy.... Like 720 lbs heavy! Also came with the starter and a gear driven hydraulic pump..... Seriously considering a power steering conversion, but once down that road, there's no turning back.

    Nice. Another spare Lucas starter is a bonus. I assume they're interchangeable.

    Are the CJ specific parts going to work for you on this engine? Any concern with the radiator hook ups?

    Hey Peter, good to hear from you. As near as I can tell, this block is exactly the same as the 192, just a slightly bigger bore. All of my CJ specific parts should bolt right on or in, including the front cover, oil pan, injectors, water pump and housing, etc. I never had a factory radiator for this one, but I'm going to try to figure out if they just used the standard F-head radiator and attempt to find one if so. That should make things a little easier to hook up and replace without having to modify another aluminum radiator.. I never really liked the way that one hooked up anyway.

    There's not much differentiation in the motors per the manual except the head gasket being different due to the slightly larger bore of the 4.203.
