    Hello,
    I don't want to peeve anyone but I'm hoping for some answers to some 72 cj5 specific jeep that I just bought .
    So here goes
    What I do know about my 72 it IS A LIGHT GREEN COLOR EXTERIOR AND WHITE INTERIOR WAS THIS A RENEGADE COLOR AND COULD YOU ORDER A RENEGADE WITHOUT DECALS?? is that it has some imperfections and I WANT TO REPAIR AND UPKEEP THIS JEEP because over all this 72 is actually in very solid good condition with some practical factory options.
    It has factory installed power steering,power brakes,warn lock o matics up front,it still retains the factory 304ci amc and the engine still shows most of its aqua greenish blue manufacture color,it has what looks and seems to be all most all of the factory engine components(exterior)and even the rubber bumpstops look factory new,
    I examined the undercarriage and that's when I started realizing how unmolested the jeep is,it has all the factory braided steele brake lines front to back drums all the way around,power sterring stuff looks grand and so does the master cylinder and all the lines hoses and such seem to be there I really think it still has the factory sparkplugs(rusty somewhat but still white)
    Theres just so much that I tried to cross examine as being oem incorrect and missing but most all of it seems to be intact
    It has a motorcraft carb and stock cleaner/tube starter looks original and still has the same color shade as the engine and tranny/bellhousing.....
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    So here's some questions that I hope some of ya'll you all can answer because this is my first jeep and I am very ignorant except that I have alllready read archives for days on these and other year cj5 and 7's.
    ------
    I cleaned the grim off the rear axle diff cover metal tag and one tag reads"USE ONLY LIMITED SLIP FLUID " the other diff had series of numbers mostly 99999 but the last three numbers were 433..
    the tag also read 41-11 so I am assuming thats the ring and pinon.
    Can someone please tell me if my rear end is 373's or if not what it is?
    So the driveline and most everything on this cj5 seems to be original except maybe a few electric relays and maybe the points cap and wires I don't know..
    The hardtop has a metal tag on the rear that reads a seriel number and model number but basically it says that the manufacturer is "KELLY" from "CHARLESTON,WV ... The doors are all steele as is the cab and both are painted a smooth white color allthough the cab and doors are solid they do show surface to paint RUST nothing that can't be sanded you know.
    There is a warn lock o matic sticker to the right of the empty glove box"lol".The sticker says something about using the warns as "a compression effect"to help aid the vehicle..
    the inside of the tub looks very very good for its age but it will need some floor board repair because there is one 2'' round hole in each front florboards.
    THE metal blinker on the steering colum is there the gauges are all looking good but I have not started it to see if they all function correctly or not but the dash does look overall factory and intact the roof of the cab has a ivory headliner that has to almost have been installed when "KELLY"built the cab,the windows roll down and the doors shut and open fine.
    This cj5 FRAME has rust but not entirely and not deeply.I can actually see plenty of factory black paint under the dirt,grim and surface rust.
    So the wheels may infact be aftermarket because the are aluminum 15inchers with semi round holes in a clock pattern but I am happy to say that each wheel does not even have a sidewalk or trail scratch on them,The tires are white letter and ironically they read "RENEGADE":)
    i DON'T THINK THIS IS A RENEGADE JEEP THOUGH BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY DECALS SAYING SO AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE PAINT IS ALL THE SAME EVERYWHERE NO PAST DECAL FOOTPRINTS.
    I BELIEVE ITS A THREE SPEED SINGLE STICK NOT SURE THOUGH .
    THE FACTORY METAL DRIVELINE COMPONENT MODEL TAGS ARE ALL THERE BUT ITS TAKING ME SOME MORE TIME TO CLEAN THEM ALL UP GOOD BUT SO FAR I THINK ALL THE TAGS WILL BE VISIBLE WITH THE MODEL NUMBERS PART NUMBERS SO FAR THE THREE I CLEENED TURNED UP WITH SOME GOOD HEALTHY LOOKING TAG NUMBERS..
    ~~So this jeep does have some surface rust all around but some labor and paint will cure that and it does have a corner that has a 3''wide by 1-2'' deep dent fixable for sure.
    It will take alot of time to get this jeep up to snuff in tip top appearence but I definetely think it will be worh it and hey how bout passing it on down the line to the next generations to come-right,:).
    ~~~~I am really ****ing in the wind with some of you probably but for those of you that actually care to read this I just want to say thanks for understanding and maybe giving me some feedback on the rear end,and some of those options and any words of wisedom would be heard loud and clear "I thank you"
    Oh and just want everyonre to know I am not lucky nor rich but I do take care in my 4 children and I JUST WANT YA'LL TO KNOW THAT I REALLY NEEEDED SOMETHING TO MAKE ME FEEL INTERSTED AND SOMETHING THAT HAS A GREAT HISTORY NAME SUCH AS JEEP AND ALL MOST OF ITS DIEHARD OWNERS AND FANS..
    Thanks again fellows.
    1972 CJ5 VIN# J 2 F 8 3 5 T H 4 3 5 2 4
    the odometer reads just over 80,000 miles actual or not who knows .lol..i PAID 1,200 FOR THIS CJ5 AND THE FELLOW GAVE ME A 83 CJ7 GOLDEN EAGLE JUST DOES NOT HAVE ENGINE,,,HE JUST HAS TO MUCH ON HIS PLATE RIGHT NOW LIKE A ROLLER 63 NOVAii,BEAUTIFUL 66CHEVELLE SS CONVERTABLE BLUE
    I answered some of your questions in red above.
    All in all, sounds like a solid jeep. Welcome to the forum from NJ.
    Now let's see some pics of this thing!
    All good info provided by Dante above.
    Rig does not sound like a Renegade.
    I'm thinking that maybe you didn't mean braided brake lines as we know them today... but rather a steel brake line with a spiral wire wrap around it... is this a more accurate description? If so, then yes that is factory, for abrasion resistance.
    HEI ignition is available for your 304, an imnprovement over the stock distributor. I believe Dante just installed this on his 304.
    Got pics?? Lots of pics weill help... especially pics of areas where you have questions.
    Welcome aboard! :tea:
    The info given above is good info and should be considered. Before you fill in the two 2" holes in the floor boards you may want to double check they are not factory. They may be factory drain holes to allow water and mud to escape the floor boards and not hold it in....
    The two holes in the floor board are factory. Or9iginally they had a rotating metal cover with ears.. On my 75 they were rusted bad, so I went to Ace and found some plactic push plugs and installed em. I can still pop em out if I need to drain water from the interior.
    Yea thats what they are "spiral wire wrap" I said braided but I was wrong but yes again they are as you described.
    This jeep does have HEI so that is a plus :)
    Lynn,
    Re: New owner of a 1972 cj5 hardtop and also new member here.I need some 72 info from
    Yea I tend to agree with ya about it not being totally a renegade however ,I did find info in a jeep history book that stated that 72 renegades seeemingly had the power lok(limited slip) option
    I would love to know if in 72 you could get the renegade options pakage minus the exterior decals.
    Also I would love to know what all options came offered in the "J12" options package;maybe I have some sort of a pkg whether its a renegade package or not will probably never be answered because of the lack of factory history paperwork packages if truly there were any and also what all the single add on options were available.
    One fact that seem o stay afloat and that is that in 72 hardtops,power steering,power brakes,limited slip(power lok),were some options available
    It just seems to me that with this jeep having so many expensive and uncommon options for 72 that maybe it was indeed a total package option with piggy back delete options ofered like maybe getting Renegade just not with the cartoon 70's decal kit.
    I know as you all probably know alot of high option packaged model muscle cars could be ordered with a deleted graphix/decals from the facory or dealers install .
    I had a 79 10th anniversary trans am and that version could be had with or without the daytona 500 pace car decals .
    I'm just more curious than anything about this renegade or not 72.
    All I can say is I feel relieved and fortunate that I have the limited slip,power steering and power brakes to say the least.
    I also was just sold on this 72 because I thought and think that this Kelly hardtop gives this 72 some eye appeal if repainted anything but white agin.lol
    I am thinking of just redoing the surface in cartoon 70's decals.lol
    Or maybe just a black body and black top clor with some sort of decals or maybe just make it a stealth black sniper:)
    I'm just gonna be created and fun but keep its factory lines as much as possible.
    I think military spec steath paint and ghost military unit insignia would be cool but not over done or too much.I plan to take the tub off and get any rust off,then por it or rhino it meaning the frame and tub
    or I could renegade it and enjoy all the factory options it has.I won't take it offroad I have an 83 golden eagle for that.
    I will lift it just abit like 3 or 4inches with some 33 or 34'' m+s lug radial tires just to give it that stought ready to do biusness stance.
    Maybe some of you would have some paint and decal ideas for this machine.
    Od BLACK(OPS) PAINT WITH DARK DARK CHARCOAL MEALLIC GREY DECALS AND SOME POWDER COATED FLAT SEMI GLOSS WHEELS WITH FLAT FLAT FLAT BLACK BEADLOCKS AND THEN ADD A ROOF MOUNTED MAGNET WILSON 2,000 OR 5,000 CB ANTENNA AND THEN A SHORT WHIP 900MHZ RUBBER DUCKY SCANNER ANTENNA MOUNT A MILITARY SPEC TALL MEATL WATER/FUEL CAN WITH SPOUTS SECURED AND THEN GET A SIDEBAN CB AND MOUNT A 102'' WHIP ANTENNA ON THE RIGHT REAR BUMPER ON THE SAME SIDE AS THE SPARE TIRE.MAYBE EVEN FIND SOME MILITARY HUMMVEE NIGHT DRIVING MARKERS(LIGHT)
    I JUST WANT TO ENJOY THIS PROJECT AND END THE END HOPEFULLY HAVE A 72 CJ5 THAT ASTETICALLY WILL BE UNIQUE BUT ALSO NO GO AWAY FROM THE MAIN THEME AND THAT IS A 72 CJ5 HARDTOP THAT IS CLEAN SIMPLE AND SOMWHAT TACTICAL IN 4WHEEL DRIVE
    Hope you guys see I am not going to butcher this jeep up if I need to butcher,change radically I will use my 77 golden eagle project for that and for the off road extreme joy riding I plan to do.
    I'm almost out of breath and well past the veberbial space allowed to post.
    But I do appreciate all of you guys responses and I really appreciate the camarodity hat you have allowed
    I will try to snap some photos this weekend I don't use cell phones because I have a home phone for that and a cb for free.:)
    Cheers
    Re: New owner of a 1972 cj5 hardtop and also new member here.I need some 72 info from
    My 72 has no 3rd seat it has just the rectanglar metal tubs kinda like it.My 72 has he tailgate with chains and S-hooks.
    I looked on the floor behind the front bucket seats and there are no holes in the floor for a rear bench like seat.
    I assume that this 72 was ordered with no rear seat of any kind?
    Kinda would make sense pratically speaking because with the hardtop if you got the tailgate version then you could then slide materials and/or supplies in and out of the tub/bed and also have some over head weather protection .
    Also my 72 passenger seat has a latch that when unlatched it will lift up and forward.I would think that most of these 72's have the same style seat.
    The jeep has a fairly wide grab handle to the left of the glovebox the bar is probably 12-14'' wide.It has a rearview mirror,overhead perforated solid type head liner.It has a cigarette lighter,oh about the glove box.What is the reasoning for having a stock glovebox but it won't open because inside the glove box door there is no glove box.Is it deleted because of maybe having larger diameter hoses back there for say the optioned heavy duty cooling system?
    The front bucket seats are white vinyl padded.the interior and exterior jeep is a puke green color.Thye color is kinda blah for my taste.
    It has the wipers knob then a wipers speed knob,a ambient flow air knob,heat knob,defrost knob.
    IT has adjustable chrome elongated rectangle mirrors left and right.
    ONE NOTE TO MENTION IS THAT THIS JEEP HAS A AIR PRESSURE GAUGE STOCK SIZE GAUGE AND RESEMBLES THEOTHER GAUGES.tHIS AIR GAUGE IS LOCATED AT THE 5'OCLOCK POSITION LEFT OF THE STERRING WHEEL ON THE FLAT DASH. IT RAEDS UP TO 150pounds of air pressure.
    It has an on board air tank sytem and the black tank is a production run looking long cylinder that has welded brackets on each end of the tank and the tank mounts securley up front of the front grill and behind the front bumper mounted between the frme rails.
    Some of the fitting and gadgets have partnumbers and one valve read "bw"and then had some numbers
    The system is clean looking and is pretty handy as you all probably allready know about its uses.
    What is striking is that in line there is one small metal air tube that goes from a T through the drivers side firewall and runns flush up the drivers side window door channel then over the DS door and then mounts on the roof to the left of the drivers head and there it then has a small 3'' thin stock bar that closes or releases air pressue from the drivers postion.
    I found a hose hookup point there too allthough the fitting is small if it is in fact a hookup .I also found one on the top center of the tank and then i found one in the engine bay.I also found where the system runs a metal tube down from the tank into the engine bay and then it ties into a thick hard rubber hose that dumps excess air/ run off air out the hose at about where the cross member lays.
    I read where some on here have mocked up there on units using AC compressors from certain amc's and york types.
    Has anyone ever known this to be an option order item or a parts dept kit?
    I seem to think that some of this hardware looks likereal army specific usages item and so maybe older military jeeps had these and this one is from the war era.Any body
    Oh and the jeep has the gas tank skid plate?
    I'm in agreeance that this is an odd ball major optioned 72 but i think too that its not a renegade but maybe a small fleet order 72 for a specific government state or forestry game and fish or something specifc for needing the tailgate,hardtop,ls axle,lock o matic,no raer seat and etc but what gets me is that it looks as if it was not used that often and maybe just sat around alot shortly after it was outdated or no longer needed.
    Kinda like when october rolls around and the government then after all year of no shooting they go down range and fire and waste all that good ammo just because thats the ole "use it or lose it government batt 's annual operating money.
    This jeep has a nc state inspection sticker that expired in 1988
    Some one let her sit and thats why the surface rust down under but no major rust and even the stock exhaust and muffular seems to look complicatedly intact also the meatl hangers for the manifolds.Just stuff like that all over this jeep like the hardly worn body bushings/rubber and the rubber stops
    Good night guys and maybe some guy 10 years from now will search the archives and see that i am telling him hello and goodnight and take care of this breed and our country!
    God Bless
    Mr Vex,
    Thanks for sharing that link with me.
    I read every page and absolutely was intrigued every word I read on some of your past jeep history!Great Story.
    Yes that #7 jeep has the same paint color as my 72jeep
    I don't know what wheels came from the factory because the wheels on it now are aluminum round holes wheels with 15inch radial renegade tires(cool touch).
    This jeep has a small rear steele bumper with a pintle hook on it the pintle hook has a greese fitting on the top left side.It may or may not be the factory bumper but it probably is if these jeep bumper option had a pintle hook.I do see a small trailer wire connector but I have not looked to see if it looks to be a factory wired trailer hookup.
    I got out there tonight and started the 72 up;1st time staring it so I was thrilled to hear it running so good.
    The fellow I bought the 72 from stated that it runs good but needs a new gas tank. Well I looked at the gas tank and from what I can see it has no holes in it so it must have rust inside of the tank or something like that.
    Incidently the gas tank does have a skid plate below the tank.
    Ok so tonight I got out there and grabbed one of my boat 12volt batteries and I hooked the jeep terminal up to this battery then I put a 1gallon gas jug full of unleaded fuel in the engine bay beside the master cylinder and I poured some raw fuel down into the carburetor.
    Ok now the big question~"Will it start and run?"
    The answer is "YES"
    The engine started after about 7 cranking revolutions.It sounds good it sounds real good:)) No lifters ticking or tocking and no tell tell signs of a old worn down engine.
    This engine revs up strong and idles smooth there is a little blip in the carburator but thats just a little blip that can be smoothed out..
    I have an issue with the brakes
    The fellow I bought the jeep from said it had no brakes but underneath it has some very good strong looking brake lines that all 4 lines run into the wheel and in general all the brake lines on the jeep seem very road worthy they are not fragile and they won't bend when trying the ole hand strngth test.
    I put the jeep in 1st gear and drove it 40 feet and then yes I had no brakes ;I had a brake pedal that feels intact tied into the line system but either it has air in the system or the brakes need adjusting or maybe there is a hidden leak
    Who knows,all I know is I then pumped and pumped the brakes but the pedal felt the same weak but not empting out.
    I drove it another 40 feet and this time I seen the left rear wheel lock down on the flat dirt driveway it skidded to a halt but the jeep felt like maybe I have rear braking power but the fronts are not working like the front is just rolling with no brake pressure built up or building up.
    I'll have to start figuring this malfunction out most promptly .
    I think its something small like drums need adjusting,air in the sytem and maybe the poportioning needs re-adjusted.
    I have some hands on with power disk brakes but never with drums.....
    Vex
    I googled "megawinch" and found nothing on that named brand winch
    Can you hook me up with a contact so that I may look into buying one of the bad boy megawinches?
    I really like the reverse plate concept as you described and I want this winch on my rig.
    Once again I loved your writeup Kman!Cool stuff sounds like you are well rounded when it comes to jeeps and there many uses plus you live in the "BIG SKY" so I know you have that common sense practical but ergonomical sense.
    Best of Wishes to you and hope to read some more future stuff from you.
    PS:
    Kman,
    I want your advise if possible on building the ultimate but cost conscious approach on want I wish to do.
    I have this 72cj5 and I have a 83cj7 the 83 has no engine,it has a good frame and body it has the the 3speed that we don't want for off roading and it had the bad gearing 83 transfer case you know that wimpy one,lol
    Anyways,
    My questions to you(guru)
    For extreme offroad which is the better platform the cj5 or the cj7?
    what is the best engine for onroad and offroad keeping weight and economy in mind but also bearing in ming needing the grunt to go up steep offroad hills(inclines)
    If ir were you would you build up my 72 cj5 or buildup my 83 cj7 for a jeep that will do it all that has the best tranny,transfer case axles and gearing and the engine that will get it all done with no problem while maybe keying in on fuel cost and weight up needed and not needed up front of a cj5 or 7
    I allready plan to atleast find a low geaqred granny 1st gear no matter what and I plan to get the ARB's no matter what axles I wind up with
    Thanks for sharing that bit about those air lockers(ARB)
    I pretty much want to build your vex thats right up my alley for what I'm looking to do but I want your advise on the best platform cj5 or cj7
    and your engine choice
    Thanks alot Kman!
    Thats NOT my website and those AREN'T my Jeeps. I was sharing that link for you to compare your '72 and Roberts '72. I also think that Roberts build-up of his '83 CJ7 is pretty cool. The Mega winches are no longer in production.
    No doubt, build the cj-7 for the trail, keep the cj-5 stockish. It just makes sense to keep the older one more nostalgic.
    The CJ-7 has a much better wheel base as a starting point for a trail rig.
    Nostalgic it is and will be then,,,
    I really like the 72 cj5 alot more than the 77 cj7 that I own maybe just becuse it seems to just scream I'm old but athletic.lol
    I do like the 77 golden eagle too;it has a really strong looking roll bar in it for starters the ones that have two parrallel bars running up top centered with the center console below.The roll bar is solid and mounted to some thick plates underside of the tub wheel wheels but I will most likely have at least 4 corner post welded thru to the frame below for safety reasons.I've heard that the roll bars mounted to the tubs are alot better than no roll bar at all but the better would be to weld it through the floors to the frame.
    I'll look into doing this.
    The cj7 actually has staright body panels no dents and the frame and chassis look really good.
    The dash has no taers or cracks that kinda suprised me.
    It has hooker headers but no engine it does have,3speed manual tranny,stock dana axles drivetrain intact in the jeep
    I intend on finding a 6.32 or 6.34 granny gear tranny and I think the T 18 will work but what others would work with it?I want to build this jeep with arb lockers and a low unsychronized 1stgranny and a similar good ratio transfer case that I can use as a twin stick too.
    Well yes then , I should start on the 77 golden eagle first and then after its up and running then I'll do a nice body off resto to the 72 with just a few mods such as a small lift, wheels and radial m+s tires,winch and I may have it repainted one of those cool 72 colors and renegade decal kits.
    I just don't like the looks of my 72's green paint colornow that it came with originally;it kinda that 70's shag carpet green color:rofl:
