I did go out and look at the winch on my Commando and yes, it is an old Warn M6000. It's done everything I wanted it to do. If I have the option, I would use my Koenig PTO. You just don't know when you will need them and the conditoins.

Random update: I entered the CJ in a car show today on a complete whim. I spent some time cleaning it up and hung out with some cool people all day.

Contrary to most of the other cars, I encouraged kids to climb in, on, and around the Jeep. It was a good time.

Even left with a trophy... 1st place in the 4x4 category... woohoo!!

In build news... still waiting on my overdrive...

Cool, let kids play and get a trophy too. I let some friends boys play in mine, I just have to go out and turn all of the electrical stuff off afterwards.

That's awesome. Congrats on the trophy and being the fun guy for kids at the car show. We went to a show here in Austin last year and the owner of the "Astro Vette" (one of the Apollo 12 cars that was Alan Beans) let my 11 year old sit and take pictures in his $10 million dollar car. Too cool and a lifetime memory for him. I bet you converted at least one kid to a future Jeep owner!

" bet you converted at least one kid to a future Jeep owner".
When I was a young'un my fathers boss had a column shift 2A parked in the shop. I could sit in it for hours and would pretend I was driving. I think that is what started this madness.

Well another interesting turn came up with the Jeep. I have an internship in Bozeman, MT coming up and after some talks and negotiation with a 4x4 magazine, they would like to pay me to make the Durango/Bozeman round trip in the Willys and chronicle the whole thing in a series of articles. The total comes out to around 1700 miles, starting in 8 days!!!

Here's where I need help from people on here:
    1. What spare parts do you think I need to bring?
    2. What specialty tools would you bring?

    1. Any and all.
    2. See #1.

    Sorry...Had to.

Cool opportunity. I think Rod Stewart put it like this:
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys have all the pain
Some guys get all the breaks
Some guys do nothing but complain

I imagine you'll be experiencing a bit of each! :D

I usually carry a full tool box and I rarely use anything out of it other than a screwdiver but some of what is in there seems to be used by somebody.
Parts, I had two U joints in the tool box and a friend managed to use both of them while in Moab for his CJ7. A electric fuel pump is always a good idea
Tools, I was South of Moab one Friday and noticed that something was wrong with a rear wheel. I tightened up what I could and gimped back to Moab 4X4 and they let me work in their lot and loaned me the hub puller. They didn't want any money for what I did there but I did pay for their beer that evening.
Really, I wouldn't carry any special tools, just check your jeep over before the the trip. I haven't broken anything on my 3B since 1986.
Oh, by the way, I should have said it earlier, good for you. I hope you have a good adventure and I look forewrd to reading about it.

Well as quickly as it came, it seems the trip has gone... massive failure in the jeep today. Can this be anything other than a blown rear main seal? It does not leak when sitting still, but if I start it it probably leaks 1 qt/min of oil out of the holes at the engine/trans junction on the drivers side.

It seemed to be pouring out from the holes just behind the oil pressure sender.

And yes, I shut it off before the pressure dropped. So no damage was done.

I don't think a bad seal would dump that much oil that quickly, plus it would drain out the bottom of the bellhousing, not the side. Check that line going to your pressure gauge, it's probably cracked at the fitting.

I know Jeeps mark their territory but this is extreme. The only worse I've seen was when I used to blow oil filters off of my 198 V6 or when I punched that 3/4" hole in an oil pan. I think Howard is right since all of the oil seems to be coming off of the drivers side of the motor. Not the bottom.

So it's been a big weekend of work on the Jeep. Rear main seal replaced and fixed.

While I had it all apart, decided to rebuild the ross box, install the tightsteer thingy, install the Wilwood dual chamber master cylinder, and the saturn overdrive. Finally got it all done but, wow, that master cylinder install is a pain.

Jeep now has almost no looseness whatsoever in the steering and can cruise at 55... no complaints from me...

Been a day or two since I updated on here. Some new stuff has happened with the Jeep.

    1) Electronic ignition unit pooped out, KW sent me a replacement distributor on the spot... kudos to them.
    2) Rear seat installed with seat belts
    3) Soft top put on for winter... needs some repairs

So today I opened up the heater to clean everything out and get it flowing how it should. I know these aren't the most common heaters to see, but it works really well and i figured people might want to see the inner workings.

Whole unit installs on the interior side of the firewall.

    Engine compartment side.

Opened everything up and cleaned it all out. The unit has two fans, one that blows air out through the cabinet doors, and a second that blows through the defroster duct.

    Heater core installed
    [IMG]

Defrost output isn't quite up to par, so some more tweaking is going to be needed.

Well the Jeep got its first big weekend off road and performed like a champ. I was in Silverton, CO running some of the passes and seeing how the Jeep did at high altitude (got it over 13,000ft. Here are some pics from the shenanigans...
