The last Cj5 I was looking at with the Ford 298 fell thru so I stumbled accross another one in a junkyard while looking for FSJ parts. Looks pretty original and early 60's vintage. Buick V-6, had the side mounted spare and has the Jeep logo on the gas pedal.

My question is, how dependable is the Buick V-6 and what kind of gas mileage do they get with a manual trans? Just blew up the 258 in the AMC 258 powered car I was driving, my fault really but that's another story. Also, if I wanted to swap in a later AMC engine how difficult would it be?

    Thanks!

The v6 is as dependable as any other motor when cared for properly IMHO.

Why swap an AMC in though? It'd be as much/more work than a more common swap - like a 4.3 Chevy. Or just look for a 231 Buick.

If I were you I would snatch up the JEEP if it was in good shape. As for the Duantless....it is a realible motor and has great low end power. The 50lb. flywheeel will help with that. Mileage I seam to remember is upper teens. Correct me if I am wrong. My sending unit does not work and I just fill her up every so often. Maybe someday I will fix that problem. I would pick it up. Good set up.

I just figured a 258 is easier to come by than a Dauntless V-6. If the motor runs great there'll be no need to swap...What kind of gearing will it have?

    Thanks!

You'd have a hard time shoe-horning a I6 into the ECJ - it's why AMC stretched the wheelbase/nose on them to begin with.

    Gearing could be 3.73's, 4.27s, or 4.88s.

Besides being almost impossible to fit in an ECJ, the 258 has less horse power than a 225.

225 are more common than you might think.
Now that I have one I am always running into one:)

    231's even more..

I saw a complete motor including flywheel and clutch last weekend for 50.00 buck's
I have a 231 and 4.3 on deck so no more coming home here:rofl:

Thanks guys, you learn something new everyday! Just out of curiosity, how hard is the 4.3 swap?
