I have been driving my jeep more since I have got the carb back to factory spec. But I have noticed it still doesn't run to well at low rpms. It only smoothed out when I retard the timing all the way to end of the adjuster. I rotated the engine over and placed the engine over on top dead center with the engine on the compression stroke and the cranks shaft lined up the pointer on the timing cover. I moved the distributor back to the center of the adjuster. and found the rotor to be at the 6:00 position instead of the 5:00. I pulled the distributor and found the oil pump to be at the 12:00 position instead of the 11:00 position. So pulled the oil pump and clocked the oil pump back to the 11:00 position and reset the timing with a timing light and it runs like horrible popping through the exhaust. Since the oil pump was out of time could be possible could it be possible the cam shaft has been out and is not in time? Did F134s have timing chains or timing gears?

Sounds like its running lean. But that is just my guess since you checked everything else.

The cam shaft is not the likely culprit, though not yet off the suspect list. When you re-indexed the oil pump, was the basic timing sitting on time (5º BTDC on the compression stroke) correctly, or did you disturb it then re-index? I'm sorry but your narrative indicates a disruption in the proper procedure.

X2. The F-head has timing gears, I doubt it would have ever run good at all if it wasn't installed correctly. At least I assume the valve timing would be off enough to cause issues. You probably should have simply gotten the rotor pointing at the right position before attempting any other adjusting.

That plate under the distributor can go on two different ways. Try flipping it over and see if you can get the timing to come in.

Sorry I posted on the wrong thread. But I read a post about pertronix igniter rings being marked wrong and causing the timing to be off?

You're right, there was a post about that being marked wrong.

My pertronix setup times off of #3 or #4 I forget which. The points were timed off of #1 when they were in there. I just changed from one to the other without changing anything else.

I've never messed with Pertronix, I assume the plug wires stay in the same spot on the distributor cap?

Ok thanks I'll check it out this afternoon when I get home. What was the kit number you used?

Don't remember the number... It has been 5 years or so, or maybe as many as 7 years.
