Has anybody here ever done it? I was looking at his website And it looks pretty damn slick! The only thing I'm not sure of his the electrical aspect. Otherwise it's pretty much the same as the track kick conversions

I'm not clear on it though. Is there a toggle switch you add to turn on the electrical parking brake?

If I didn't already have 11" Drums with the Parking Brake stuff, I'd probably be all over this.

"The clamping force is determined by the amperage to the motor. The factory control system uses a current limiting driver for this. A control system in its simplest form can use something like a DPDT momentary switch to control both motor direction AND both motors at the same time. My general theory for controlling the motors would be to use a auto-resetting breaker to set the clamping force at say ~10amps per motor. The release side of the motor circuit would use a ~15amp per motor circuit to ensure that you always have more power to release the motor than you do to activate the parking brake. This bias can be adjusted based on if both caliper motors are wired together, or if they can be activated separately.

I would love to hear other ideas on how the caliper motors can be controlled.

If you want a completely 'off the shelf' control system, Willwood is now offering this ~400usd micro-controller logic system.
Wilwood Disc Brakes - Controler EPB Caliper - 620-15487"

This system looks like it could be used with a rocker switch to engage the motor or reverse it as a simple use or recreate the wilwood system above for a lot less money... maybe..

I really like this concept and his ability to try and install some modern stuff into the old axles to solve a real problematic issue with rear disk brakes on old jeeps. My initial question at first glance was if this is a DOT approved system and clearly it is as an OEM product on many of Fords car line.

I have an electric parking brake on my KL, and it's very effective. However, it must latch up when it's set, otherwise you'd need to supply power to it constantly. It would be interesting to look at how one of these works, just out of curiosity. On my KL, you set it with a momentary rocker switch, and the indicator comes on. Engine off, indicator off, brake still set. Engine start, indicator on, brake still set. Jeep won't move until I flip the switch to extinguish the indicator. One must activate its motor to release the brake.

Has he tested it after covering it in gear oil?

If you just want an "all on" or "all off" the toggle switch will work fine

If you want intermediate braking levels there's going to be a very sharp rise in current vs. time as the pads come up against the disk, basicly idle load curving up to full load stalled in a fraction of a second; a very fast measurement system with the current draw plotted against braking force would be required.

Personally I'd go with the switch.

Yes. I'm using two momentary dpdt switches to control the left and right calipers.

I could totally go for this swap. No parking brake cable dragging through the brush and no pesky drums to jeep adjusted properly.

I am unclear though, this kit is for the flanged D44? Or he offers a kit for either the flanged or two piece axle?

This is really cool! Would there be anything weird with these going on an offset flanged dana 44? I have one, but haven't torn into it to see what the differences are between the early and intermediate axles. My plan was to use brennan's original brackets (already have them) but this might be pretty cool!

This is similar in the way it works to the air parking brake on my Motorhome. The air sets the lock and you will need equal air pressure to unlock it. This guy is just doing it electrically with a solenoid.

The Expedition has the toggle deal for the parking brake. It's all on or all off. The flex is a good ol and trusty cable actuated caliper.
