15532083852761865375853.jpg My 70 cj5 master cylinder was replaced during frame off repair build bout 3-4 years ago!
Brakes work great, great pedal travel , only 1in down from rest , and firm pedal, no spongyiness!
But it takes a lot of foot pressure to get the job done if in a hurry?
I'd like a smaller master cylinder bore size. I know from fooling with hot rods with "cams"
that a smaller bore gives better pedal feel!(large cams don't pull enough vacuum to operate power brakes).
I'd like a master with a bolt on lid, but I'd use a conventional type if necessary?
    Anyone know my stock bore?
Is their factory oem type options?
I've done this mod before to 3900lb cars with good results, way better pedal feel, way less foot pressure required to panic stop!
Usually 2mm, bout,1/8in smaller, is all needed?
Willwood sells them by bore size! Sometimes good parts s tore guys can find them in a book(for bout half the willweood master).
    All ideas welcome!

Ok, from web research, my stock master should be a 1in. Hope someone can conform .
I've found some 70s ford and GM with a 7/8 bore.
I'm guessing this would improve the wooden pedal feel enough.(3/4 also available).
I've never had any hydraulics training.
If this works, it would be less expensive and less work than the many brake conversions
    I read about.
Some of you All with hyd understanding chime in.
Found this chart on Hamb site, where someone was doing the same mod as I.
If I'm reading correctly, looks like a 25% increase in braking psi, going from 1in to7/8 ?

Here is some info on master cylinder with "constant" of 6 to 1 pedal ratio and 100 psi being applied.
    3/4" master cylinder = 1359 psi
    13/16" master cylinder = 1158 psi
    7/8" master cylinder = 998 psi
    15/16" master cylinder = 870 psi
    1" master cylinder = 764 psi
    1-1/8" master cylinder =603psi

Something is wrong- a '70 should be 10" brakes which should work perfectly well, not power brake well, but well.

Are you sure the mc you installed is the correct p/n for stock? 1" travel seem a bit short.

There's always a trade off- smaller bores will improve feel but mean more pedal travel.

    For what its worth...
I had replaxed my mc with a newer style and it was close, but not close enough. The pushrod didnt work with the new one. Had a hard pedal.
Got another different new one and it works much better. Dont know the part number but it should be in a couple old posts. 2-3 years ago?

I am stepping off the edge here . my original lasted for say 20 years . always thought it stopped fine with the stick.
dumb move by me I went and put a auto in it . well it took a huge amount of foot pressure to keep it from creeping
couple of years later . it needed replaced . got another stock one (bolt on cover) what a difference it made . my guess was the old one was leaking internally . with two pressure switches . brake light always worked  pedal never when to floor . except when a wheel cylinder went bad
