I'm wanting to use a M38A1 canvas summer top on my CJ5. What hardware is needed?

Should be a direct fit if your CJ5 is 1955 to 1975 and the M38A1 is 51-62. Presuming you mean Bikini top. If you have a roll bar then no hardware.

Here's what I was thinking. Maybe just the bows? Anything to attach to the windshield?

You will need the military style top bows and the sockets they fit into. They seem to be getting expensive to find, but it looks like you have some.
Other than that, the rear straps need six footman loops across the tailgate area, and the top/front face of the windshield should have the usual "awning" channel.

If you want to stow the top bows in the down position, there is also another two pairs of brackets needed, as seen in the photo you posted.

I have used the these tops and love them.

I have already done this I bought the roof bow and brackets from a Ebay seller and I bought the canvas top from WeeBee webbing. I have changed the tailgate to a M38 tailgate because the side mounted spare tire has to be removed in order to put the M38A1 roof bow on.

I didn't drill the extra holes in the body I found them filled in and painted over with body seam sealer.

    1957willys, that's exactly what I was thinking.
Do I just need the 2 brackets and pins on each side for the bows?
My CJ has the hardware for the rear straps across the back already.
did your top come with the rear straps?

    thanks

Yes the straps are sown on to the top and the brackets and wing nuts came as a kit. Look for M38A1 roof bow bracket set it's a 8 piece kit I'm sure KaiserWillys and Walcks carries them.

Just another thought, is it possible to make a couple bows and use the existing bow sockets and a M38A1 top, like these?

I would say no. The miiltary bows have a strong rear-ward bracing geometry, and the canvas itself has a deep "pocket" angle at the back top corner.

Thanks Pete, I get what your saying.

And from looking on the web, the M38 and M38A1 Bows are the same. Different brackets.
