While doing the rear 11" Bendix conversion, the passenger side was dripping down the backing plate that was just sitting on the bolts. I'm guessing it's the inner bearing seal and differential fluid. Does the differential fluid get in the tubes to leak out? I'm assuming if so then it would dilute the bearing grease,so best to handle it now? In watching videos and reading the FSM, it appears that to get to that seal, you have to remove the bearing and its race, correct? And to do that, after removing the hubs, backing plates, shims, etc., again., you just use a dead blow hammer to the axel shaft on each end to force the other side out. Assuming that's all correct, and assuming the bearings/races are good, I don't need to worry about verifying the shim pack again? What size dead blow should I get?

    It never ends.

Can't Get My Tapered Axles Out, What Am I Doing Wrong?

I didn't use the axle shaft to hammer the seal out, I took the axles out and used a small pipe that was long enough. There are seals on the differential side and on the wheel bearing side. You will need a hub puller to get your axle apart.

If you don't get proper end play after reassembly it's real bad. There's a really good video of how to put the tapered axle together and set end play, I can probably dig it up if you need it.

Here's what happens when you get diff fluid in your wheel bearing... it overheats... real bad.

Found the video. This helped me tremendously, it moves a little slow but it's packed full of good info.

Yes that video was helpful. I had watched it before but he never showed how to get the axel out to get to the bearing and inner seal. His video is where I assumed you used the dead blow on the opposite side. But I'm guessing not now. So a slide hammer is how it's pulled?

Once I had the hub off I put my drum on backwards with a nut to hold it on. It sorta acts as a slide hammer, gave it a couple good pulls and the axle came right out.
