Just for a little background on this, I dropped an engine off about two months ago at a machine shop and was told that I'd have my engine in my hands before Thanksgiving. That time came andwent, and since then i have been told that it wouldbe done before the end of the week. Welp, that only works for so many weeks, and I'm going to be pulling my uncomplete engine from the shop tommorow (orr, a friend is). Now then, Since it's been in there so long withthe promise of being done by the end of the wek each week I'm beginning to question any work that has been supposedly completed on the block, crank, and heads since it was dropped off.

Here's where my question comes in. I'm driving down friday night and should have the engine in my hands when I reach town. Is there anyone in the area that can look at this block and verify that work has been performed, and performed correctly. It's a 225 crank going into a 231 block. Crank has been polished, holes bored out, and valve guides lapped... supposedly. Any got some free time on saturday to go voer this with me? Frank, Coby, Jason, anybody?

Chris I'd help, but I'm heading to NC for Xmas Fri. around lunch time, and I'll be up there till the 2nd of Jan. If you have a good micrometer you can measure the crank journals and verify they are the same. Im assuming when you say all the holes bored out your talking about the cyliders? To measure that you need a bore gauge, and I dont have one or access to one here to help with that. You can check the valve job by putting a little marking grease on the head and drop the valves in and see if it leaves a good even mark all the way around the valve.

Alright, I should be good now, just never had it explained to me. I can get the tools to do the measurements and I'm doing the googling now to see how much taper is okay with the 231 (although it should have no taper if it has been machined..).

Can a trip to the machine shop ever turn out good with no bumps in the road??

Automotive machine shops.....they're either wizards of precision or scammin' bastards, doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

Do you already have your main/rod bearings?? If so you can put the caps on the block, torqued to spec, and measure them with a bore gauge checking for consistancy between caps, and checking for roundness (measure in 2 spots but in a X pattern). After that see how it all compares to the factory specs if you have access to that information. If not I can probably round it up for you. Then measure the thickness of your bearings (when measuring your bearings, use a round object like a ball bearing as a spacer between the mic and the bearing so you dont get a false reading due to the square edge of the mic.) and compare that to the size of the crank. You should have a couple tenths of clearence for oiling. If I remeber any other tips I'll let you know.

guess I should change this to who's in Atlanta over the holidays?? I'd like to meet the people I aven't seen before, and I swear I'll be getting back into the metro area as soon as I can...

and the engine seems like it might be okay now. I won't know for sure until tomorrow afternoon as I'm heading down, hopefully things will turn out for the better.

Doesn't look like the original poster has logged into this site since July 2014. If you click on their name you can see this info.

Check with the speed guys - guys who do racing and such. They should be able to point to a good shop. Also - go with the one with the oldest guy running it. He may know enough about the V6 to be a real asset.

My machine shop guy is 89... Still going in the shop 6 or 7 hours a day.
