They're a combination of both in a sense. Serial numbers, date of delivery, etc. are for example stamped. Others are embossed I believe. I think if you lightly used paint remover you'd be ok. Maybe try a corner/edge and see what paint remover does.

To answer your 1st question Surplus City Jeep parts has ready to ship Lheads and Fheads, motors for 151's 715's etc.All of the motors are fresh rebuilds and require a core. The L heads run $1850.00 and shipping from california will be steep too.
    their # is 1-800-353-3772
That being said I have about 1200 in rebuilding My L head with a local Machine shop and my time of dismantle and rebuild.I would not do it any other way in hindsight and learned volumes about my motor and mechanics in general along the way.
If I could change anything I would have taken more pictures along the way with the digital camera for reference, used more ziploc bags to keep parts seperated and not assumed I would remember as much as I thought I would.

Well, unfortunately the plates are so rusted that I'm unable to glean any info. I looked at the pictures at "jeep spotter" though, and it's either an MB or a GPW. One detail maybe someone can help with. On the side of the body, where your feet would pass over if you were exiting the Jeep, there is a vertical seam in the metal - right at the lowest point of where the metal drops down. There are 2 bolts that fasten the 2 adjoining pieces. I can see in the picture that the MB does indeed have this seam, but I can't verify one way or the other if the Ford model also has this seam. I want to take pics of the Jeep. Can someone give me some advice of what area specifically to take pics of ?? The front end is original, but the cross member bumper was removed and a modified piece was fitted to facilitate a winch and an A-frame tow bar. I understand that the MB had a front pipe bumper (or was that the GPW ?), but that identifying characteristic has been removed. No bumper on the rear. Also, it doesn't say Willys on the back, so if it's an MB, it's a later edition. If someone can tell me exactly what to take pics of so it can be positively determined which model it is, I'd be very grateful. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it...

One frame identifier is the front cross member (under grill) is round for Willys, and sort of a formed channel I believe for Ford. I believe there are some dash differences of some sort so dash pictures would probably help. Gas tank fill is another. I think the early ones actually had a filler under the seat straight into the top of the tank. Not sure if both Willys and Ford though. I think there were some differences in the tool boxes that are in the wheel wells. Those are some places to start with anyway. On the data plates I thought they were all brass but I guess not. That might be an indication of time frame too. Weird that they rusted if they're painted over. :?

We,, I'll take picture of all the areas you describe, and elsewhere too. I guess the plates aren't brass, or they wouldn't have rusted. It looks like they painted over them after they rusted, 'cause the rust is coming through the paint. I would think that non-brass plates are cheaper, so maybe that would indicate a later era. I'll try scraping them some more, we'll see what happens. At "jeep spotter", they say that the tool compartments are different on the MB and GPW, but it doesn't provide details about the differences...This poor old Jeep isn't in very good shape, but it would be nice to see it running again...
