Found a '64 CJ5 that somebody swapped a 289 V-8 and a 3spd manual from a 66 Mustang GT into, unsure of the original drivetrain but I'm guessing it was the Dauntless. Basically I've only ever messed arround with 'late model' Jeeps like CJ7's, FSJ's, some XJ's and a TJ but my heart lies with the older Jeeps.

Call me crazy but I've been looking for a 2nd Jeep to drive and I came accross this CJ5. I've noticed most of the aftermarket Cj5 stuff available is for the 'newer' CJ5's, does anybody make a windjammer/tonneau cover/bikini top combo or do ya have to go with a full top &door setup? Not looking to make this one into a cross country driving Jeep, although it would be sweet, and I'm not looking into modding it out into a rock crawler either, might paint it to match my M416 though.

So what year did the roll bars go into CJ5's? What are some things to look for other than rust &rot? What's the weight?

    Thanks!

21-2700 pds. depends on options (full metal top, winch, etc...)

Full top/door or bikini top, I think some have made a windjammer work, Hudsonhawk IIRC did. No tonneau that I know of but the tub didn't change much so you could probably make a Late CJ-5 cover work.

    Sounds like a fun rig.
Roll bars became optional sometime in the early to mid 70s. Roll bars prior to that were aftermarket or made locally.

Look for sheet metal rust/hat channel rust (some of the hat channels had oak stiffeners that promoted rust)
Check the frame for heavy rust/pitting, and for cracks at the frame horns and at the shackle hangers/spring mounts. Also around the replacement motor mounts.

Canvas work is relatively easy to do custom or have done - just find some boat places around.

I think next year I'm going to have a custom bikini made for the 6, and thinking about a little "mini-tonneau" to cover the area behind the back seat (since there's so much of it... ) where it won't be under the rollcage.

First year* for optional factory roll bars was '75, or maybe '74. Prior to that, they were all aftermarket and dealer/owner installed.

    * Except for the Renegades - a roll bar was part of the early Ren package.

    Wouldn't a '64 have had an F-head engine, not a Dauntless? I thought the V6 didn't come around until '66....
