Another member here recently handed me a locking gas cap to which he had no key.
    The cap is shown below.
It is quite heavy and well constructed.
It appears to me to be 50's in origin, maybe earlier.

With the key cover rotated, we see the words: Dual Loc and the key code:ST 216
Normally with a key code, a locksmith (me) can make a new key without disassembly.
I couldn't find my book with this code, so we need to take it apart.

Turning the cap upside down, we see the cover and three screws. Let's look inside.

With the screws, cover, gasket and gasket tension spring removed, we see the lock cylinder from the rear.
We also see some identification words and a model number.
The cap was made by Stant Manufacturing and the model number is XC280.

We also see on the rear of the cylinder the nub or pin driver that would drive the locking lug, which was missing from a previous user. The new owner states he can fabricate and will do that later.
At the top of the key slot can be seen the spring loaded cylinder retainer, that when depressed, will allow us to remove the cylinder out the front of the cap.

Once the cylinder retainer is depressed, the cylinder now pushes out the front.
Note the very tight fit between the cylinder and key cover.
Care must be taken during removal to not damage either.

Once the cylinder is removed, a new key blank can be hand filed to fit the lock cylinder.
You can also now see clearly the spring loaded cylinder retainer sticking up.

Reassembly is the reverse order. Adding a little lube to the cylinder is a good idea.
Fuel and fumes are corrosive to pot metal parts.
The finished key and cap to return to the member.

    Hope this helps someone.
This cap is made to fit any under the seat gas tank in my view.
These old locking caps are easy to service, so if you run across one, don't be afraid to add one to your Jeep.

Not the giant-size military filler tube. :)

The one I have in my possession is marked "B".
It fits both of my under the seat tanks.

Maybe contacting the seller to verify the box info might be best.
