Locked out timing?

My HEI mech timing weights are giving me headaches with erratic timing problems. Thinking of changing over to a locked out dist and using a MSD timing computer. Anyone ever done this? Do you still use vacuum advance, just lock out the mech timing weights?

 

I never used a msd but I just mixed and matched springs and weights until I got the right timing.
